I pulled away and looked up at her before smiling and squeezing her hand. "Love you too, Scar."

"My father's outside. You can go wait with him and I'll find Grayson."

"Sounds great."

She walked out of the room with an excited bounce in her step, leaving me to follow close behind. I stepped outside the house and found her dad standing by the water. He was probably waiting for me, I figured, and so I ran over to where he was standing.

He looked at me with a smile.

"Ready to go?" He asked.

"Yep."

We were still too shaken by the ordeal to fully recover. There were so many uncertainties. It was impossible to know when the Shadow Dragons would strike next. The only thing we knew for certain was that they were gone for now. And now we were back where we started.

I smiled nervously at Kane, who still looked exhausted. He'd just gotten a good night's rest, and we were all glad. If it weren't for him, I'm pretty sure we'd all be dead. I couldn't imagine what would have happened if he hadn't been able to stay quiet for so many years about who Scarlett really was.

Chapter Twenty-Eight

Grayson

After spending the night going over everything in my mind repeatedly, I needed some answers. So many things didn't make sense to me. When morning came, I couldn't wait any longer. I waited until Kane woke up and started asking questions.

"Why didn't you tell me? You told me Scarlett was my mate. Then you constantly told me how weak she was. You made me think that she was incapable of protecting herself."

"I couldn't tell you the truth until she was ready for people to know. It's dangerous. People like Blaise would have been looking for her when she was a child if anyone found out. I'm sorry I lied to you, Grayson, but my daughter's safety is all that mattered to me. It's still all that matters to me."

"So, you decided not telling me was best because you're scared of what would happen if someone finds out?"

"Then why tell me that she was my mate?"

"I wasn't telling you anything you didn't already know. She had already made her choice. There was no way I was going to change it so, I thought that maybe it'd do some good if I convinced you it was a bad idea instead."

The silence after was deafening.

"She has shown herself now. That means that those who want power will be looking for her. She can't protect herself from everything. Would you have been willing to spend your life constantly moving and keeping her safe?"

I didn't reply. He was right. The thought of devoting my whole life to one person wasn't something that I had given much thought to. It dawned on me that returning home wasn't possible.

"She is my only concern. I would give my life to protect her."

"You won't need to," Scarlett interrupted as she walked into the room, "When are you two finally going to realize that I am stronger than you think?"

"I'm not saying you’re weak, Scarlett," I replied, "but you just found out that you are the queen. It takes time to perfect that kind of magic."

"Just found out?" Kane responded, "She didn't just find out. She's always known. I don't hide things from her."

"You knew? Then why go through all this?"

"It's for her own good. When she's ready for people to know, then maybe they'll stop trying to kill her."

Scarlett rolled her eyes, "That sounds like a load of bullshit to me. They are never going to stop. And you know I'm going to have to fight them if they try."

"You don't understand," Kane said sternly, "I cannot let something happen to you. Not again. If there is a chance that they might actually succeed in killing you, I will use every resource at my disposal to make sure they never get their hands on you. I will do whatever it takes to keep you safe. I will always be by your side."

Scarlett smiled slightly. "Thank you, father."

She turned around and left the room without another word.
