Mitch hesitated.

“You might as well tell me,” she said trying to sound much braver than she felt.

He nodded. “I asked Gunnar to look into your grandfather. I thought any information we can get might help us with the society. Gunnar uncovered something…about your parents’ death.”

She went cold and then hot. Her breath caught in her throat but her heart kept pounding like it was trying to escape her chest. She couldn’t speak.

Hawk moved forward in his chair. “What did he find?”

“I’m so sorry, Remy, but your parents didn’t die in a car accident. Well, they were in a car accident but the medical examiner’s report says they were shot before their car went off the road. They were dead before they ended up in the ravine.”

All the air left her lungs in a whoosh. She couldn’t breathe. Her parents were murdered.Murdered. Just like her grandfather. She was sure of that now too.

Suddenly, Hawk was beside her. “Breathe.”

She blinked and slowly turned to look at him. The edges of her vision were getting fuzzy.

He gently pushed her head between her knees. “Take deep breaths.”

Finally, her lungs began to work again. A few seconds later, she sat up again. “Thanks.” She gave him a weak smile. “It’s just such a shock.”

He nodded and went back to his chair.

Remy looked at Mitch. “Tell me the rest of it.” She knew there was more.

Mitch frowned. “It looks like your grandfather covered up what happened as best he could. I guess he didn’t want you to know the truth. He was trying to protect you. It was only because Gunnar found the original autopsy report that we found out. I would imagine the society helped him hide your parents’ real cause of death.” Mitch shook his head. “I am really so sorry, Remy.”

She nodded. Speaking wasn’t an option at the moment. She was so angry, betrayed and hurt that her grandfather had lied to her but she was livid that her parents had been murdered. The society had to be the reason. It had to be. The key burned a hole in her soul as if she’d been branded by it.

She reached for the handkerchief her mother had given her. It was all so unfair.

CHAPTERFIFTEEN

Hawk’s phone rang. He excused himself, stood up and moved over to the corner of the room before answering it. “Connor, how’d it go? Everything okay?”

“Yeah, it’s fine. The Asian boys and I had a right old chat. You were correct. They are part of the Triads. They didn’t say which one. Their leader wants a token, but this one, in particular. He needs the protection it offers as a board member. He’s willing to use all his power to get it. He would happily pay me for it if I find it but they were very clear that if I stuck my nose in, and didn’t sell it to them, they’d be happy to chop it and several other body parts off.”

Hawk had leaned forward in his chair. “What did you tell them?”

“I told them I’d happily back offifthey had the token, but until then, it was up for grabs. They got a bit nasty, but my mates and I handled it. A few of their number will be spending the night in hospital, I reckon.”

Hawk grinned. “They should’ve known better than to attack you at your own place.”

“The cheek!” he said and chuckled. “Anyway, it’s all clear if you want to come back. They’re not watching the place so far as I can tell.”

“Ah…” He glanced at Mitch. “We found somewhere else to stay for tonight at least.” When Mitch nodded, Hawk continued, “Thanks for your help, though. I hope we didn’t bring too much trouble to your door.”

“It’ll blow over, I expect. Once this business is sorted, they’ll forget I ever existed. Hard to imagine, I know,” he joked.

Hawk smiled. “Thanks again, brother. I might need some help tomorrow night. Will you be around?”

“I’m always a phone call away for you, my friend.” He chortled as he hung up.

Hawk leaned back again. His gut had unfurled only slightly at the news that the Triads didn’t actually know he and Remy had been there. It was a close one. He had known the moment Connor told him the Asian men had entered the bar. He didn’t know any specifics, but he knew there was danger. His senses had told him, and he’d already been on his way back from getting their jackets when Connor called him.

He glanced at Remy. She’d paled again. His heart broke for her. She kept getting pounded by all her family secrets. Wave after wave. She had to be crushed, not to mention exhausted. God knew, he was.

“So, what is the next step?” Gage asked in a quiet voice.
