“Please, she’ll kill me,” he begs.

“What do you think I’m going to do to you? Huh?”

Mortianna wouldn’t stand for one of my guards killing her spies. She’d find a way to turn this around on us. I just know it.

I place my hand on Dom’s shoulder to capture his attention. His head shoots my direction with a look of fury. I don’t speak, not in front of this man. Just give him a subtle shake of my head, letting him know this isn’t a good idea.

His eyes bore into me, sending a chill down my spine. Dominic always runs hot and cold, but right now, he’s ready to murder someone.

He scowls, turning back to the spy. “Why don’t we let the princess decide your fate? How about that?”

The man relaxes under the weight of Dominic. He thinks I’ll let him go free. He thinks I’m weak.

He may be right because I don’t want his blood on my hands. Maybe my father was wrong. Maybe I’m not fit to rule after all.

“Well, what’ll it be, Princess?” Dominic asks, sternly.

“What were your orders?” I reply.

“Uh, just to follow you and report back to the queen dowager with what I witness,” he responds, nonchalantly.

I wonder how invested this man is in Mortianna’s schemes.

“And what would your report be today, sir?”

He looks between Dominic and me, no doubt choosing his words carefully.

“Umm—nothing, Princess.”

“Nothing? How do you think my grandmother would respond to one of her spies having no use to her? Do you think she is a gracious woman? Because I can assure you, she is not.”

Dominic cuts in, fisting the man’s collar, pulling him up to meet his gaze. “Do you take us for fools?”

“N-no, sir. Please, I just want to go home to my family. I won’t say a word to the queen,” he squeals, shaking in his boots.

“Queen dowager. She’s no longer your queen.” Dominic turns to me, waiting for my instructions. The mere fact he’s letting me take the lead on this is astonishing. Giving up control is not something that comes easily to a man like him.

“This is youroneandonlychance to do the right thing. Sir—”

“Charles—Charles Cumberfield,” he stutters.

“Well, Charles Cumberfield, you are free to go. But if we find you doing my grandmother’s dirty work again, you will pay with your life.”

Dominic stands, shaking his head. His silence speaks volumes.

“Thank you, thank you,” he praises, dusting himself off as he gets to his feet.

In the blink of an eye, I realize I made the wrong decision. Time slows, Dominic turns toward me to say something, but before he has the opportunity, the spy pulls a knife from his boot.

My adrenaline kicks in, Dominic’s eyes go wide as I step into him, drawing the blade at his side. The man moves to strike Dominic, but I’m already ahead of him. It’s like I’m predicting his every move before it happens.

I shove Dominic back and bury the dagger deep into the man’s gut. Then for good measure, I twist the blade and pull it out as he drops to his knees.

Dominic steps forward taking the dagger from my palm, leaning forward, he places a kiss to my cheek. “Good girl,” he whispers as he pulls away.
