“He—he was going to,” Robyn stutters, her hands trembling as she stares down at the man’s body.

“Shh, it’s okay. You did good, baby,” I say, pulling her into my arms, running a hand through her golden hair and pushing it away from her face. I gently rub circles on her back, trying to soothe her pain.

Nuzzling her head into my chest, she chokes out a sob.

I failed to protect her. She should have never been put in a situation to defend us. And now, she’s killed a man.

Taking a life does something to the soul. Blackens it. Torturing you from the inside out until you’re forced to deal with it.

I won’t let that happen to her. I won’t stand by while the darkness snuffs out the light inside her.

My fingers slide under her chin, tilting it up so she’s forced to look at me. Her beautiful blue eyes weep with tears threatening to fall.

“What do you think we’ve been training you for, Princess?” I arch my brow, tightening my hold on her.

“I-I,” her words fall short.

She blinks the tears away, and I wait patiently for her attention to return, so my words will resonate.

“You tried to save him. He didn’t want to be saved. You did what was necessary. I should have never put you in that position.” I shake my head, regretfully. “I should have never turned my back on him.”

She stiffens in my arms. “He wasn’t here to spy. He was here to kill us.” The words leave her lips not as a question but as a fact. Pride fills me that she was able to come to this conclusion on her own. It means she’s listening and learning to what we have been trying to teach her.

“And you protected us. Not me. You!” I boast, proudly.

She searches my eyes looking for something that isn’t there. She thinks I’m pacifying her, but I’m not.

I’m proud, and for some reason, when she finally sees it, she starts to cry again. A grin tugs at my lips before I lean forward, kissing her softly.

My head spins at the touch of her lips. They’re soft and inviting. Desire stirs inside me as I struggle to hold back. My need for control consumes me, but she needs gentle. So I try my damnedest to give it to her.

The moment her lips part, I slide my tongue between them, caressing her soul from the inside and soothing away every doubt she has. Taking the darkness for myself.

Her hand reaches up to the back of my head, pulling him to her. She grips my hair at the root, giving it a tug, and I become feral.

A low growl rumbles in my chest, my hands find their way into her hair, pulling her into me like neither one of us can get close enough. Our bodies press together while our mouths collide in a forbidden dance.

When her free hand starts to travel down my body, reaching my hard, aching cock, our eyes shoot open simultaneously.

I tear my lips from hers. Her hand reaches out to pull me back to her.

“Shit! Shit! Shit!” I yell, swatting her hand away. My chest caves as I fall to my knees, burying my face in my hands.

How could I be so stupid? She isn’t mine to touch. She’llneverbe mine.

“I’m sorry, Princess. I should’ve never—”

“But I wanted you to.” My eyes shoot up at her admission.

I shake my head at her. “No, you don’t mean that. You’re confused. I know better,” I say as the heavy weight of guilt and regret weigh on me.

She drop to my knees in front of me, tugging my hands from my face, and I let her.

My eyes dance around, refusing to look at her. She hesitates, then leans forward, pressing her lips to mine the same way I had done. Only I don’t open. Instead, I slam my eyes shut, releasing a pain-filled groan before pushing her away.

When I open them again, I find her electrifying gaze locked on to me. I shake my head in shame.
