She holds my stare the way she always has. Neither of us willing to turn away. I wonder what she feels when we do this dance.

Does her belly heat with desire the way mine does? Does she think of all the ways to defile me the way I think about her? Does she picture a life together that could never be?

Probably not. I’m the only masochist who dreams of things he can never have. Yet, today I allowed myself to capture a small piece of her. A piece that shouldn’t be mine, but I couldn’t help it.

She stares at me with longing in her eyes, but I watch as it shifts into something else.

A devilish grin marks her face as she leans forward, taking the dagger again.

“If you say you regret kissing me, Dom, so help me, there will be two dead bodies in the forest today.” My eyes turn to slits as she cautiously twirls the dagger between her fingers.

My gaze bounces from her eyes to the dagger, then a grin crosses my lips, no longer able to conceal my amusement.

We both fall over with laughter.

After a few minutes, she looks at me with a smile as our gaze locks, and my grin fades.

She drops the dagger, shaking her head at me. “You gave me what I needed, Dom.”

She doesn’t get it.

“I shouldn’t have crossed that line, Princess. Seeing you so broken made me weak, and I wanted to take it all away,” I confess.

She chuckles, avoiding my gaze, but I see the blush of her cheeks.

Curiosity gets the best of me as I quirk a brow. “What’s so funny?” I ask.

She holds up her hands playing with them, nervously. “Umm, well, I guess it’s hard to imagine you being anything other than strong. Weak isn’t a word I would use to describe you.”

I glance at her, biting my lip trying to choose the right words, then roll onto my back with a huff.

Should I confess my innermost feelings? Probably not, I find myself doing so anyway.

“Maybe not in the sense you are thinking of, but when it comes to you, Princess... I lose all my senses. Right or wrong, I’d give you the world if I could, and not because it’s my duty, but because I want to.” She sucks in a breath, but I refuse to look her way. I’ll lose my nerve. Instead, I continue looking up at the sky. “I’d do anything to keep you safe. To protect you from all of this,” I say.

Biting the inside of my cheek, I finally turn to look at her. “You give me purpose. Yes, even when you are driving me crazy.” She chuckles. “When you stood there in my arms feeling lost and confused, I felt weak because I didn’t know how to take it away, so I did the one selfish thing I could think of and prayed it would work.”

My eyes roam over her face, committing every ounce of her beauty to memory.

Her hand reaches out, gliding along my jaw. My body leans into her touch.

“My father told me something crazy before he died,” she chuckles, pursing her lips. “He said he had handpicked all of you for me.”

I nod, confirming her father’s admission. It’s true, he always made a point to tell us how he had chosen each of us specifically for his daughter. Boasting about how good he was at the match up.

She grins. “He also said he hoped one day I’d open my heart to one of you or—”

“Or what?” I question as my brows shoot up.

“Or... all of you,” she whispers, turning away from me, not able to look me in the eyes.

That’s it, now I’ve heard it all.

I laugh. “He did not.”

She hops to her feet with a scowl on her face, dusting herself off, and I follow. “Yes, he did. Are you calling me a liar?”

I shake my head, unable to control the laughter bubbling inside me. “He must have really been gone off the poppy.”
