Then he texted again early on Saturday morning, but Rhiannon made the decision to ignore the message.

It was still unopened, and she felt guilty thinking about Mars.

Their date had been amazing; she couldn’t deny that. But getting home to her small apartment had shaken everything back into perspective for her.

Mars was a billionaire and a bear shifter. There was no way she could ever hope to fit into his life.

And she didn’t think there was space for him in her life either.

And whatever Gerri meant when she said that Rhiannon was Mars's mate didn’t really matter to her. Whatever it did mean, it sounded serious, and Rhiannon had been avoiding serious relationships for many years now.

She preferred to focus on work and all her side projects because those were a lot more fulfilling than any of the men she had dated in the past.

Although, Mars could be the exception.

There was no telling whether Mars actually wanted to date her or whether she was just a project for him until he got bored. Maybe the shelter project was something he was doing to look good in front of all his corporate sponsors.

Regardless, Rhiannon had decided that it wasn’t going to work.

All she wanted was to forget about him and focus on the dozens of cases on her roster and the shelter project. Rhiannon fell into fitful sleep thinking about Mars, and her dreams were hot, vivid, and senseless.

On Sunday, she spent the day catching up on work and bingeing the TV shows she had missed during the week.

But as evening drew closer, she couldn’t ignore her thoughts any longer. She had to know more about Mars.

The first of the search results put Mars's wealth on display. There was article after article on his father’s real estate empire and how Mars had consolidated it.

Rhiannon didn’t miss the tabloid articles about Mars dating socialite models.

She bit her lip, desperate to read them. But the pang of anxiety that thrilled her confirmed what she knew. She shouldn’t have searched his name in the first place.

There was nothing online to make her hate him. There was nothing to justify her avoidance of Mars.

There was no news of any charity work that he had done. But still, it wasn’t enough to hate him.

“Ugh!” She groaned, tossing her phone onto her bed and rubbing her tired eyes.

Get a grip, girl! You’ve barely met the man. You can’t start obsessing about him now,she told herself before heading off to the shower.

On Monday morning,Rhiannon got out of bed before dawn, brushed her teeth, and put on her trainers. Then she headed for the treadmill in a corner of her living room. She had discovered the benefits of getting her heart pumping before work a year earlier.

Now she rarely left home for work if she hadn’t sprinted on the machine for at least twenty minutes.

After her shower, Rhiannon prepared to leave for the office. She would have to stop downtown first to pick up legal papers regarding the shelter project.

Hopefully, you can get a coffee along the way. God knows you need it,a crabby voice in her head grumbled. Rhiannon agreed. She was exhausted after her weekend of worrying about Mars.

She pulled into her office parking lot just after nine. She had worked her way up the ladder enough that she could really arrive whenever she wanted.

“Hi, Nathan,” she called a greeting to the security guard, chatting up one of the paralegals. Nathan was an incorrigible flirt and had been married three times already. “Is Ellyn in yet?”

He smiled easily and lifted the sign-in sheet.

“Uh, yeah, she’s in.”

She nodded her thanks before sprinting for the elevator.
