He was dressed dapper. Sophisticated and stylish, the buttoned-up businessman.

She stroked his lapel. “I don’t need an assistant… You remember to be kind to Lance. Forgive him already. He’s one of your closest friends.”

“Okay,” he said, sitting up to retrieve something from his inside pocket. “And this is when you try to remember how charming I am.”

He held up a dark rectangle to show her, then put it on the nightstand. “What’s that?”

“Anything you need. Keep it for emergencies, use it every day, whatever you want.”

“It’s a credit card?”

“A special one,” he said. “I won’t be here to cover your coffee.”

“Yeah, and we know how that breaks the bank.”

After they shared a smile, he grew solemn and curled his fingers around her jaw to angle her mouth to accept his.

It was just a brief kiss. A simple meeting of mouths and a too quick retreat.

“Call me anytime, okay?” he said. “Anything you need, it’s yours.”

“Call me when you get there.”

He breathed out a laugh. “Baby, I’ll call you from the plane before you start work… modern technology, remember?”

And he owned the plane, so no one would tell him to hang up.

“Okay, but be good.”

“All yours, I promise.”

“I didn’t mean that kind of good. No more deals with Lance that break women’s hearts, okay, please?”

“Okay.” He tipped her head down and kissed her hair. “Bye, Button.”

He lingered for just another second. Her heart pounded while watching him walk out of the bedroom. She sat up. Something screamed inside her that they weren’t done.

Without even thinking, she leaped to her feet and scrambled across the bed to jump down and dart to the door.

“Baby!”

At the front door, seconds away from leaving, her exclamation brought his attention around. She was already moving, running to pounce up and wrap her arms and legs around him. Capturing his mouth without consent, she didn’t want gentle or to say a simple goodbye.

There were so many variables. So many possibilities. So many things that could go wrong. Whatever they were, her body didn’t care. Neither did her tongue as it raced to learn every millimeter of his.

Squeezing him tight, his passionate response spurred her on. They may not be together, but she wouldn’t take the risk of letting him walk out without proving just how much headway they’d made.

Reluctantly, she broke the union, though she happily accepted his short farewell follow ups.

“That was a helluva goodbye,” he said. “I already wanted to stay with you and now…”

“Take the win, businessman. Now go do your job. Faster you go, faster you’re back with me.”

Breathing out, he held her as long as he could as she slithered down his body.

“You’re my light… I’ll always do whatever it takes to get back to you.”

She stroked his jaw and welcomed one more kiss as he opened the door at his back. “I’ll see you soon.”
