“Darlin’, if you don’t stop looking at me like that, I’m not going to be able to control myself, and I’ve got plans for us today.”

When I look up at him with lust in my gaze, he adds. “Notthosekinds of plans. Not yet anyway.”

He hands me a travel mug to pour my coffee into before fixing his own. I watch him mess around in the kitchen for a few minutes, and I take in every inch of him. I practically gawk at the way his muscles flex under his shirt from even the smallest of movements. It’s not like he is built like someone who is lifting weights constantly. I’m fairly sure that all of his muscles come from nothing more than working with his hands on the ranch all day.

When we are finally ready to go, he walks me outside and helps me into the cab of his large pick-up truck.

“Nice truck,” I say as he helps me up onto the running board.

He waits until he walks around and gets into the driver’s seat to answer. “Thanks. It’s still a little new to me, and I’m trying to get used to it.”

“What did you have before this one?”

“Same kind of truck. Just a lot older. I bought it from my grandpa when I turned sixteen, and it was old back then.” He laughs.

“If you don’t mind me asking, how old are you?” I ask.

“Not at all. I’ll be thirty-one in a few months. How about you?”

“Almost thirty,” I say, not wanting to divulge exactly how close my birthday is.

“Dirty thirty, huh?” He says while giving me a sly side gaze.

“Something like that.” I chuckle.

“When is your birthday?”

“Uhh,” I consider not telling him. I hate making a big deal out of birthdays. Maybe it’s just the fact that I’ve never had anyone make a big deal out of one before. I finally say, “In about two weeks.”

“Two weeks?! Well, we have to celebrate!” He grins.

I hold up my hands. “Completely unnecessary.”

“Why’s that, sugar?”

“Let’s just say I don’t want to make a big deal out of it and leave it at that.”

I brace myself for a fight, but he drops it. Instead, he says, “So, is there anything, in particular, you want to do today?”

“I thought you had our day all planned out?”

“I have some ideas, but if there is something you really want to do, we can do that too. I don’t want to steamroll you here.”

He smiles, and I think of all the ways I would love for this man to ‘steamroll’ me.

Stop it. You don’t need to soak your panties before the day even begins.

Who am I kidding? My panties have been soaked ever since I met this man.

I realize I’ve been sitting in silence for a little too long, and Jonas is cautiously eyeing me. So, I say, “I don’t have anything in mind, but I am a little hungry.”

“I think I can take care of that.”

We spend the rest of the ride making pleasant small talk. I like it. It feels effortless, and for someone who is always guarded, it’s a welcome change. That was one reason why Michael and I worked so well. He was my best friend, and things seemed easy. Apparently, I put too much faith in the ease of it all.

A couple of minutes later, we are pulling into a parking space at the end of a string of shops. He throws the truck in park and jogs around to help me down. I do not doubt that I could get out of this truck on my own, but the gesture is nice, I guess.

We begin to walk down the sidewalk, and Jonas’ hand falls on the small of my back as he leads the way. His slightest touch sends a shiver down my spine. There are a few people scattered on the sidewalks, and I can feel all eyes on us. I try not to let it bother me, but I avoid attention at all costs, so I can feel my cheeks beginning to turn red.
