My entire body tenses, and Jonas takes notice. Leaning down, he whispers in my ear, “Calm down.”

“Everyone’s staring,” I say through gritted teeth.

“They’re jealous that I’ve got the prettiest girl in town on my arm.”

The statement makes me roll my eyes. I know he’s just trying to make me smile, but once again, I’m not great at taking compliments.

He leads me a few shops down into a store that reads “Dina’s Divine Desserts.”

“Isn’t a bit early for dessert?” I ask as he holds the door open.

“It used to be mainly desserts, but over the years, this place has become the best bakery around. Their pastries are a little slice of heaven.”

When I walk through the threshold into the cute, little shop, the decadent sweet smell of assorted baked goods hits me. I inhale deeply, my head swimming with all the different scents.

We walk up to the counter, and there’s only one person ahead of us in line. Gazing at the display case that shows off all the sweet treats, my mouth begins to water. There are cinnamon buns, lemon scones, blueberry muffins, and cherry danishes. They all look fantastic, and I have no idea how I am going to decide.

Jonas leans down next to me to look in the glass display case. “What looks good?”

“Everything,” I mutter. “How am I going to choose?”

His dimples appear as he gives me a sly smile. “I think I have a fix for that.”

Before I can ask him what he means, the lady ahead of us has finished paying for her order, so Jonas steps up to the register.

“Morning, Dina,” he greets.

“Good morning, Jonas. What can I get for you, baby doll?” The older woman asks. She has long, grey hair pulled into a tight bun on the top of her head, and she has thick glasses hanging from a gold chain around her neck.

“Well, Dina, this here is Andi, and she just moved to town, and I’m trying to get her hooked on all of your deliciousness just like everyone else in town, so I’m going to need two of everything you’ve got in the case.”

My eyes grow wide because there must be at least twenty different varieties.

I’m about to argue with him, but Dina turns her attention to me. “Welcome, Andi.”

“Thanks,” I say with a shy smile.

Jonas leans on the counter. “Dina, do you think you can maybe put out a good word for Andi? It seems she got off on the wrong foot with someone here in Grady.”

“And who might that be? Or do I even want to know?”

“Brenda Jenkins.”

Dina rolls her eyes. “Of course. That woman thinks that her nose belongs in everyone else’s business.” She turns back to face me. “Don’t worry about her. She’s just bitter. Let me get everything boxed up for you.”

Despite our large order, Dina has everything ready to go in less than a minute. Jonas pays, and we walk out the door to one of the small, white metal tables in front of the store.

“You didn’t have to get all of these, you know? I would have picked something,” I say.

“I know. But I wanted you to have options. Besides, we can always take the rest back to the house and munch on them later.”

He takes the lid off one of the boxes, and the sweet smell fills the air around us. He lets me have the first pick, so I opt for a cherry danish. I bite into it and try to stifle my moan.

I’m unsuccessful because Jonas stops what he’s doing and looks at me as though he might fuck me right here in the middle of the street.

“Sorry,” I say with a semi-full mouth.

“Don’t be sorry. That’s sexy as hell. I just wish I was the one causing you to make those noises right now.” He winks at me, and I press my thighs together at the mere thought of that.
