“Can we talk?” He asks.

When I don’t respond right away, he adds, “Please. I have some things to say. You spoke your peace earlier, and I’d like to do the same.”

I step out of the way so that he can come inside. This time, I have a couch, so I usher him to have a seat, but he stays standing.

“This won’t take long,” he says, and I brace for impact. He’s about to tell me how awful he thinks I am and that he should find Nicole and make cute little Southern babies with her.

I’m just noticing the bag in his hand, but he sets it on the floor and grabs my hand instead. The slight touch sets my skin ablaze.

“I want to let you know that I heard what you said. You’re tired of living by someone else’s rules. You want to figure out what’s going to make you happy.”

I nod, and he continues, “But you seem to have a couple of things wrong.”

He takes another step closer to me, and I can’t help but notice how amazing he smells.

“Andi, I think I need to make something crystal clear to you, and I’m sorry if I didn’t do a good job of making it clear before. I’m not here to derail any of your happiness. I’m here to add to it. And if you aren’t exactly sure what your happiness looks like, I’ll be the first one to help you figure it out.

“Listen, if you need time to be alone, that’s fine. I’m not going to smother you, but don’t for a minute try to downplay what this is. Don’t say that what you and I have isn’t special because it is. I don’t know about you, but I’ve never felt anything like this before in my life.

“I’m crazy about you, Andi, but I’m sure that you find all of this a little overwhelming after everything you’ve been through, so I’m not going to push. I’ll let you set the pace. You tell me what you’re ready for when you’re ready for it.”

I hang onto every word that he is saying. Here I thought that he was coming over here to tell me where to shove it. Instead, he comes over here, making me wonder where his armor and white horse are.

Since I appear to be speechless, he continues. “My point is that I’m going to be here for you as much as you will let me be. I want to be with you, and I think you want to be with me?”

Still unable to speak, I simply nod.

“Then, I’ll follow your lead.” He takes another step toward me and is close enough to whisper, “Except in the bedroom. If you’re okay with it, I’ll still take the lead in there.”

This time, my head nods so hard that I might break my neck.

He chuckles, “Okay, baby. I just wanted to come to say that. I’ll get out of here.”

He steps backward, and I instantly miss him being so close.

Suddenly, finding my voice, I say, “Do you want to stay?” I now imagine how I’d like him to do that whole controlling thing in the bedroom that he mentioned.

“No, that’s alright. You told me you needed a little bit of space, and I’m respecting that. Oh, before I forget.” He picks up the bag off the floor and hands it to me. “Dinner.”

“Dinner?” I ask, reaching out to take the bag.

“I figured you hadn’t eaten, and I’m sure you didn’t cook anything,” he says with a cute wink.

Well, he’s not wrong.

“It’s pasta from a restaurant in town. You’ll like it,” he says.

“Don’t you want to eat with me? There’s plenty here,” I say, glancing in the bag.

“Nope. All for you. Whatever you don’t eat will make great leftovers. I’ll see you at work tomorrow.” He kisses me on the cheek and heads for the door.

I watch his perfect ass through his jeans with every step he takes. I’m fairly sure he can feel my eyes on him because he turns and gives me a knowing smile before walking out the door.

Once he’s gone, I take a moment to try to slow my beating heart. How does he always know the perfect things to say? Maybe because he seems to be as close to perfect as a man can get.

I turn on a movie on my phone since I don’t have my TV hooked up yet. It’s the same romantic comedy I started watching last week.

Grabbing the assorted take-out containers out of the bag, I set them all on the coffee table in from of me. Opening them one at a time, I drool at all of the amazing smells.
