There’s Fettuccini Alfredo, Chicken Parmesan, and Shrimp Scampi. And there are five smaller containers with assorted cheesecakes in them.

Holy shit. I don’t even know where to start.

I opt for a little bit of everything. There are a couple of disposable plates and silverware in the bag, so I scoop out some of each pasta.

I can’t help but chuckle thinking about how much my life has changed in the last couple of months.

Back then, I’d be sitting in my house all alone just like I am now. But I’d have a husband who wouldn’t have the wherewithal to bring me dinner, and if he did, it sure as hell wouldn’t be pasta. It would be a salad or a protein shake.

He’d sell me some bullshit on how he was just trying to get me healthier, but I knew it was because he wasn’t fond of my jiggly parts.

I’d try to stay healthy, but there's only so much kale a person can eat before they go crazy. So, when I’d want take out, I’d put it on my own personal credit card just to avoid a lecture and the ensuing fight.

When we had sex, it felt forced like he was just doing it to drain his balls until the next time he got to his mistress. Of course, back then, I didn’t know about his infidelity. I wish I could say that deep down, I had some sort of inkling about it, but I didn’t. I wore my rose-colored glasses until the bitter end.

Now, I’m in my own place, making the rules up as I go. And I’m seeing a man who makes the men in this romantic movie seem like schmucks—a man who is willing to let me do things my way without putting any pressure on me.

Maybe I was too hasty in my decision to give all of that up.

I finish eating while watching more of the movie. When I’m too full to eat another bite, I force myself to get up and put the rest of the food in the refrigerator.

Once that’s done, I consider unpacking some more, but I opt to try to get some sleep instead.

When I get into the bedroom, I walk over to the box labeled NIGHTSTAND, which sits on top of the small table where its contents will be stored. When I open it, I move aside the few books that sit on top to hide the contents underneath. Here, at the bottom of the box, is my collection of three vibrators.

Needless to say, they got a whole lot of use when I was married.

Pulling one out, I switch the button to the ON position, and it begins vibrating in my hand. I consider taking it to bed with me and having a good time. After all, Jonas got me all excited earlier.

But I click the button again, turning it off, and toss it back in the box. I’ll wait until I see Jonas again.

As I crawl into bed, I can’t help but smile at the fact that reality has somehow become better than my fantasies.

Chapter Twenty-nine

Jonas

The next evening, I’m sitting on the couch with Beau as I flip through the channels. There’s not shit to watch, but I think I’m just trying to kill some time until I’m ready for bed.

I stayed late at the ranch because one of the heifers was giving birth, and let’s just say things didn’t go smoothly. We had the town vet there, but I stayed to help when the umbilical cord got wrapped around the calf’s neck.

Dealing with that took up most of my time, and it was dark by the time I stepped foot in the door. Exhausted is an understatement.

I stopped by to check on Andi for a few minutes this morning, but she had her nose buried in a bunch of spreadsheets, so I didn’t want to take up too much time. I meant to stop back in during lunch, but the day just got away from me. I made a mental note to apologize to her tomorrow.

I ponder pulling out my phone to text her just to tell her I’m thinking about her, but I’m trying to stick to my promise of not smothering her.

Beau’s ears perk up as he looks toward the front door, moments before there’s a knock on it. He looks at me and at the door before laying his head back down.

“You’re the worst guard dog ever,” I mumble while getting up.

When I swing the door open, I’m a little surprised to see Andi standing there. I’m not sure who I was expecting, but it wasn’t her.

‘Andi?” I ask. “Is everything okay?”

She nods. “Yeah. Sorry, I should have called first.”

“Baby, you never have to call. You just surprised me, is all. What’s up?”
