She holds up the same bag I took to her house yesterday. “Well, you see, I have this great guy who brought me all this amazing cheesecake last night. I was wondering if my sexy neighbor wanted to help me eat them.” The seductive look on her face tells me she’s interested in far more than cheesecake.

Suddenly not tired at all, I invite her in. She sets the bag on the table in front of the couch and then sits down to love on Beau.

“He must have known it was you because he didn’t bark when you knocked. Either that or my momma has turned him too lazy to care.”

After she’s done cuddling him, I make him get down so that we can eat. I grab us a couple of forks, and we dig in.

The moans she’s making make me want to always make sure I have cheesecake on hand.

“How was your day?” She asks.

“Busy.”

“Yeah, I saw you before I left. I was going to stop and say hi, but you looked like you had your hands full.”

I explain what happened and how we got everything taken care of, leaving out all the gory details on account that we are eating.

“What about you? How was your day?” I ask.

She takes another bite before answering. “It was good. I printed out a bunch of your financials and spreadsheets and spent most of the day going over them. I do better with paper copies I can hold in my hand. It’s all starting to come together. I hope to have some concrete ideas to show you soon.”

“Take your time. I’m in no rush,” I say with a smile.

We keep eating cheesecake and making small talk for a while before I finally ask, “Okay, Andi, I know you say you came over to offload some cheesecake, but why don’t you tell me what’s really on your mind?”

She sets her fork down and looks at me. “I think I owe you an apology. I was a pretty big jerk to you yesterday.”

I go to interrupt, but she keeps speaking.

“I need to get this out. Jonas, I’m not exactly sure what ahealthyrelationship looks like. It’s not like I’ve ever been around them much. I was married, and he wore me down to the point I became just a shell of a person. You and I just started moving so fast, and I got scared. Really scared. And instead of just talking to you about it, I said some awful things to try to push you away. But instead, you came over and were willing to put my happiness above everything else. I’ve never had someone do that for me before.”

She pauses for a moment as though reflecting on her own words.

“My point is that you didn’t give up on me…on us. Thank you.”

I set my hand on her knee. “Andi, the way I see it is that a relationship doesn’t have to look a certain way, and it certainly doesn’t have to be perfect for it to be real. As far as I’m concerned, a relationship is two people fighting for each other. Fighting for their relationship…their future…even when the chips are down. I’m not asking you to drop every wall you have, and I’m not asking you not to have doubts or reservations. Let’s just promise to talk to each other when things get rough because I want to try like hell to make this work.”

She softly laughs to herself.

When I ask what’s so funny, she says, “I just don’t understand how someone so wonderful just got dropped in my lap. Things like that don’t just happen to me.”

“Maybe you’re due for some good in your life, baby.”

She smiles. “I hit the jackpot then because you’re a good man, Jonas Mitchell. One of the best.”

Scooting closer to her, I say, “You know, you keep calling me a good man, but there’s one area where I’d rather be bad.”

Her breath hitches in her throat as she catches my meaning.

Gently, I lay her back on the couch and begin running kisses up and down her body.

“If you’re not ready, you can tell me to stop. No hard feelings,” I whisper.

“Don’t you dare,” she moans. “I want you, Jonas.”

That’s all it takes for me to completely forget how tired I am and focus on giving her exactly what she asked for.
