He gives me a mischievous grin. “Then, I guess we might just have to go shopping.”

Chapter Thirty-one

Jonas

Andi sleeps next to me, and I’m not far behind. Lying here with her makes the rest of the world fade away. She smells like cherries and vanilla, and I can’t get enough.

I’ll sleep next to her every single night if she lets me.

My utopia is soon interrupted by the sound of my phone ringing in my pants pocket on the floor. Andi doesn’t seem to notice the sound, so I decide to let it go to voicemail.

The silence only lasts for a minute before it starts ringing once more. I decide to get up and answer it, fearing something might be wrong.

Still naked, I walk over and grab it and pad out of the room as quietly as I can. Looking at the screen, I see it’s my mother.

I take a seat on the couch and cover up my cold bottom half with a blanket.

“Hello?” I answer, trying not to be loud.

“Jonas?” She asks.

“Momma, you okay?”

“I’m fine. I just needed to run something by you.”

I’m about to scold her for calling so late and worrying me, but when I look at the clock, it’s only 8:30, so I think better of it.

“Okay, Momma. What’s going on?” I ask quietly.

“Well…” she pauses. “Jessie has moved back to town.”

My stomach drops. That’s one that I certainly didn’t want to hear tonight.

When I finally speak, I say, “Oh, by ‘back in town,’ do you mean back at your house?”

She hesitates. “He’s trying to get back on his feet.”

“He’salwaystrying to get back on his feet,” I retort.

“Give him a chance, Jonas. Your brother has been through some rough stuff the past couple of years.”

I cut her off. “Oh, cry me a river. Everyone goes through rough shit. That doesn’t give him a free pass to ruin people’s lives.”

Typically, I would never give my momma so much sass, but she knows Jessie is a hot button for me. I’m guessing that’s why she’s not commenting on my tone right now.

I realize my voice must have gotten louder than I meant it to when Andi comes walking out of the bedroom with a sheet wrapped around her naked body.

She pushes her messy sex hair out of her eyes before mouthing, “You okay?”

I nod, and she comes to sit on the couch next to me, curling up in the crook of my arm.

“So, why’d you call, Momma? You wouldn’t call me just to tell me he’s back in town. So, why are you calling?” I ask.

“We’re going out Friday night. The whole family. I’d like you to come.”

My scoff fills the room. “No way. You know he and I shouldn’t be in the same place at the same time. Plus, I don’t think Jessie going ‘out’ is a good idea.”

“Jonas, he’s trying really hard to do better. He has a job, and he’s trying to better himself. He’s making an effort, and he’d like to see you.”
