“I bet he would. He probably wants to ask for money and knows I won’t take his phone calls.”

Now her tone turns angry. “Jonas Lee, you listen to me right now. I’ve done quite a bit for you over the years, and I’ve never asked for anything from you. The fact that I can’t have all my kids together at once kills me. So please, do this for me.”

She's right. None of this is fair to her. But her coddling Jessie isn’t going to get us anywhere either.

The most I can muster is, “I’ll think about it.” And then, I hang up. I know I’ll catch hell for that later.

“What’s going on?” Andi asks in a sleepy voice.

“Jessie is back in town.”

She yawns. “He’s your youngest brother, right?”

“Yeah. Momma wants to go out this weekend so that we can try to make amends.”

“Are you going to go?” She asks.

“That’s a loaded question.” I chuckle. “I don’t know. I don’t want to, but it seems important to her.”

“If it’s important to her, why not just do it?”

“I don’t know,” I grumble, trying to come up with a good excuse.

She grabs my face, turning me to look at her. “Put yourself in her place. Imagine you had four kids. They’re all in the world that you have. And they refuse to be in the same room together.”

I can’t help but notice the irony in this situation. Just a few days ago, my momma was telling me to put myself in Andi’s shoes. Apparently, all of the women in my life are wiser than I am.

She begins to talk again. “I’ll even go with you if you want.”

“Really? You want to come and witness all the Mitchell family drama?

“Eh, you have a lot of family drama. I have none. It evens itself out.” She giggles.

As much as I still don’t want to go, I figure now is probably as good of a time as any. Besides, if I have Andi there, she will be a very welcome distraction.

I doubt Jessie has changed at all, and maybe when he shows his true colors once again, Momma will finally get it through her head to stop babying him.

Probably not, but it’s worth a shot.

“Okay, beautiful. We will go,” I say with a kiss to the top of Andi’s head. But all I get in return is a soft snore.

I stand up off the couch and lift her into my arms, carrying her back to bed. Then, I curl up behind her and pull her close.

Despite the shitty phone call, at this moment, all is right with the world.

Chapter Thirty-two

Andi

“You sure you’re okay?” Jonas asks for the third time.

I reach over the center console of the truck and grab his hand.

“I’m fine. Are you sureyou’reokay? We haven’t even gotten to the bar yet, and you’re already on edge,” I respond.

He sighs. “I’m sorry, baby. I’m alright. Just really don’t want to do this.”

“It’ll be fine. Just think about getting through this. We will go to the bar, have a drink or two, and play nice. And then, we can come home, and you can do whatever you want to my naked body.”
