“Like I said, survivors can tell. You didn’t get that sense with me?”

I’d noticed a strange kinship with her, sure. Then when I’d heard a little more about her story I understood why.

I could see myself hanging with her, but that would inevitably lead to sharing stories, and that wasn’t anything I wanted to do with anyone. I couldn’t let that poison out. Not into Angelina. She was too…perky.

I pushed away from the table. “Well…I better get back to work.”

“Think about it, Sarah.”

I walked away from the table…and her. It sure would be nice to have a friend. Arealfriend.

I’d never had a normal friend before. As a sex slave, you pair up with some of the other girls once in a while. But every time I did, they never came back.

Nicco made sure of that.

Chapter Eleven

Drey

“Thoseguyshaveaboutfour seconds to settle down or we’re going to step in,” Hunter said about the two college boys facing off at the far side of the dance floor.

“They’ve been drinking for three hours straight and they both have their sights on that chick there, see that?”

“Nice call. Start heading that way. You might—”

“What is Sarah doing?” I asked, moving toward the guys Sarah was approaching.

“Go. I’m with ya.” Hunter nudged me forward.

It’d been a busy night for the coolers and bouncers. It was like the moon was full or something and everyone…more the males…were on fire.

Sarah sashayed up to them, her long, toned legs on display from that tiny miniskirt she wore. Brushing her fingers along the frat boy’s shoulder, she winked. She spoke, but I couldn’t hear her above the music, and she tapped her finger beneath his chin, getting into his line of sight.

I slowed, totally confused—and slightly in awe—of what she was doing. It was like her mere presence subdued the guys. And just like that, they were engrossed with the striking beauty standing before them.

Wasn’t surprising, though. Sarah always garnered attention when she strode into a room. And lately…she’d been walking taller. With more confidence.

Which made it that much harder to stay away from her. And right now, I was about to pound some faces if they touched her.

“What’s she doing?” Hunter asked.

“Whatever it is, it’s working.” I pushed through the crowd as Sarah led them off the dance floor. They followed after her, desire flooding their eyes when less than two minutes ago aggression ruled.

“Stay on her, make sure she’s okay.”

Hunter peeled off to the side while I turned to intercept Sarah and her two new admirers. I tailed them to the front door where Sarah waved at them.

The kicker was…they left without a fight. They only seemed a little more drunk.

She turned around and stopped just before contact with me. “Drey!”

I guided her off to the side. “Care to explain that?”

“What?”

“Don’twhatme, Sarah. What happened there?”

“Nothing. I asked them to go cool off.”
