Drey stood tall, eyeing the doctor. “He was attacked?”

“Cops are involved. Looks like…gang activity.”

My heart cracked.

“Can I see him?”

“Yeah. He’s in ICU. One of you at a time.” Dr. Patterson looked at me. “You’re going to stay with Drey?”

“Yeah. I got him.” I touched his hand again, and he flinched, every part of his body tensed. “Can you take us to Damon?”

We followed Dr. Patterson in a thick silence. I slid out my phone and texted Bill. Drey would need Hunter for sure. If anything to help keep Drey’s temper in check.

“We had to tube him. He’s got seven broken bones, including his cheek. Fracture in his skull and swelling. I can’t do much for him until we get that swelling down a little. But we need him to wake up. Not only to tell us what happened, but well, we need him to wake up.”

“The longer he sleeps, the more likely he’ll slip into a coma,” I said.

“You a nurse?” Dr. Peterson asked me.

“No. I know a little about this.” Unfortunately because I’d been beaten to a pulp more than once. “Drey. You good to go in there? I can go first if you want.”

“I’m fine.” His jaw tightened.

“I’ve got rounds. I’ll check in on you later, son. I’m sorry.” He dipped his head and walked away, his white coat whooshing.

“Drey. I—”

He turned around and yanked me into his arms. I held him tight, burying my face in his neck. “You’re here with me. You’re here. We’re okay.”

His body shook as tears dampened my shoulder. “I’m here, Drey.”

I wasn’t sure how long he held me, but it was like hecouldn’tlet me go. Like I was the source of his energy. Grounded him. I was fine with that. I could be that for him. Hell, he was that for me.

His mother died. His brother might die, too. Hell yeah, I’d be that for him. I’d do anything to help him. To keep him safe.

“Go see him. I’ll wait right out here.”

He stepped away, then cupped my face and kissed me. “I’m good. I’m good.” He whispered against my lips. “Love you.”

“I love you, too.” I stepped away, and he walked through the doorway into ICU. A nurse pointed him to the left.

And then he was out of sight. I sighed and sagged against the wall. Holy shit, his family might be lost to him tonight. In one fucking night.

“Sarah!” Hunter’s voice ricocheted off the walls, and I jumped. “Where’s Drey?”

I pointed through the doors into ICU and told him and Bill what Dr. Patterson told us.

“Son of a bitch!” Bill’s face went red. “Damn gangs. That kid…”

“You did everything you could for him, Bill.” Hunter waved to us from down the hall. “Sarah, do you need anything?”

“No.” I wasn’t sure what I needed other than for Drey to be all right. And Damon. He couldn’t lose his family all in one night.
