Page 66 of Playing with Fire

Alastor slowly lifted his hands, the red-stained palm clear as day from where I was sitting. It was then I noticed Cerberus was not the demon dog he normally was, he appeared to be a normal mortal one instead.

"What is the meaning of this?" Alastor asked, his tone calm and curious.

"Where is the girl?" the officer asked.

"Samantha?" he asked, playing stupid perfectly.

The officer's gaze drifted to me, and he tensed some more. A swift wind would break him in half. His face lost all color as I gazed silently back at him.

"Demon!" he stuttered. Well, he got that one on the first try. I lifted my eyebrow at his outburst, and his colleagues shifted nervously behind him, unsure of what they had gotten themselves into.

Alastor barked out a laugh and pointed at me. "Bellamy? He just came back from a cosplay show, pretty realistic make-up don't you think?"

"There are reports he had a dead girl with him." The officer pulled himself together as he stepped forward.

"Sam might have had a little too much to drink, Officer, but I can assure you she is just sleeping it off, not dead," Alastor said with a shrug, his hands still up.

"You. Put your hands where I can see them." He motioned with his gun at me. If I moved my hands, the hunter would tumble to the ground.

"I would drop her if I did that," I replied. I pinned him to his spot with my stare and watched as a nervous swallow worked his neck.

"Wake her up," he ordered.

Alastor caught my gaze and gave me the slightest shake of his head. He must have seen my thought of destroying them all just so she could continue to rest. But he was right, that wouldn't do. They would only send more.

I shook her gently, and she stirred slightly, letting out a soft groan. "Samantha, you need to wake up for a moment," I coaxed her.

She blinked up at me, confusion plain on her face. "Bellamy?"

"Miss, are you okay?" the officer asked. He had stepped right next to the couch. "Are you hurt? It looks like you are bleeding."

"This?" I slipped my finger through the leftover blood. "Strawberry syrup," I said and sucked the tantalizing liquid off of my finger.

"They were cosplaying, Officer," Alastor said, attempting to remind him of the lie he had told when they first arrived.

"Is that right, miss?" the officer asked, his laser like gaze focused on Samantha.

She shifted in my arms, still weak from the blood loss. "Whatever I was doing, I might have had too much to drink." Her words slurred and concern washed across the man's face. He probably thought we drugged her.

"Johnson, get a medic up here," he called into a radio on his shoulder.

"Fire has just arrived," the crackled response came back a few seconds later.

"That will do."

We waited in silence for the elevator to bring up a medic that could probably tell the officers that it wasn't strawberry syrup at all. The thought of releasing her for anyone made a growl leak out. Alastor covered the sound with a cough. As the doors swished open, I focused all of my attention on who theyrevealed. It was the dragon shifter. He held a medical kit in his left hand as he stepped onto the floor.

His attention darted between the three of us before he was kneeling in front of Samantha. He pretended like he didn't know any of us, even though I could feel the anger radiating off of him and smell the sulfur in his puffs of breath. Home. That was what he reminded me of. It almost made me laugh, anger and fire.

"Watch the light," he instructed, as he checked her eyes for dilation. She obediently did what he ordered, playing along with whatever situation she had woken up in. "Good."

He pulled out other tools to check her vitals. Then he used gauze to wipe away her blood.

"Strawberry syrup," she murmured as he checked her neck for open wounds. All he would see would be a faint scar that Alastor couldn't eliminate.

His eyebrows went into his hairline as his jaw tensed. "She is fine, maybe a little too much alcohol. You need water and rest."

When he stood up and faced the officers, I could see them relax.
