For the first time, I see genuine concern there in his eyes. He’s worried about her physical well-being as much as I am. Yeah, he might be a bit of a controlling asshole, but he cares.

“Come on,” I tell him, and the senator follows me into the house and down the hall to my bedroom.

Inside, we walk up on a kneeling Sara, lifting the bedspread and arguing with a Secret Service agent.

“No, you can’t take a new mom away from her babies. That’s fucked up.”

“Sara?”

Sara turns to see me with her uncle, and her face goes pale. “Uncle Logan, what are you doing here?”

He seems incredulous. “I came to make sure you were okay.”

She stands and faces him. “I didn’t know you were going to send the cavalry. I just called to tell you there’s a break-in and that something off about Sentinel Security.”

Another agent enters the room. “Ms. Dunne is in custody.”

Sara, her uncle, and I all turn to the agent who just spoke. “Can anyone tell me why her goon is in my fucking house?!” I ask.

The agents exchange looks, and the second one clears his throat. “Since the F.B.I. is officially handling the investigation, it won’t be out of line for me to tell you that Ms. Dunne and two other employees — including the one you tied up in your kitchen back there — are believed to be conspiring with Expert Chemical.”

Sara and I exchange a look. “But what do they want with Chutney?”

“Who?” asks the second agent.

“The rabbit giving birth under my bed,” I say, cringing as I think of what in god’s name must be soaking into the carpet as we speak.Doesn’t matter, Gunther. Material things can be replaced, fixed, or repaired.

The agent chuckles. “Oh. That might have something to do with what the vet found after he scanned the microchip on the rabbit.”

Sara leaps to her feet. “They tracked her here?”

The agent shakes her head. “No. A tracker would have been a good idea, though. Especially if a company is suspected of selling recipes for new chemical weapons to the Russian government. And using live animals to do the drop.”

First, I’ll vomit, then I’ll pass out. I could be brought in for questioning for fucking treason. “Expert Chemical?”

“I’ve said more than I should,” the agent replies.

“I thought they made shampoo and shit,” I say.

The first agent snorts. “‘And shit. Lots and lots of other shit.’”

CHAPTER16

Sara

Three days later

“So let me get this straight….”

The weather is warming up again, and Gunther is working in the garden, digging up damaged plants and replacing them with summer vegetables. His buddies are coming by later to help him build a rabbit-proof fence.

I hand him a seltzer with smashed raspberries and limes in it. It doesn’t look that appetizing, but this is how the man takes his water.

And now that I’m living here, it’s my job to care for him.

“Hmm,” he grunts, eyeing the glass before taking it from me and sitting up on his knees to drink from it.

I press on with my rundown of events while I help him dig the holes.
