I point at my ear. “To me, it does. They tampered with it.”

“So now you know about music?” He rolls his eyes and laughs.

“Some. One of my tutors was a music teacher. I can play the piano.” I wink at him. “Stick around, and I might play for you.”

“If you behave, I might introduce you to my neighbor. She knows a tune or two.” He smiles fondly at the thought of this woman. “So, what are we having for dinner?”

“We can order pizza, and you can tell me more about your neighbor. Are you two together?”

“Not for lack of trying.” He smiles fondly, and maybe it’s best if I don’t try to explore something between us. I’ll meet a man or a woman someday. But it’s not on top of the things I want to accomplish in the next decade.

Derek: How’s your weekend going?

Piper: It’s been interesting.

Derek: Why?

Piper: No one likes Zach’s bride.

Derek: Do you like her?

Piper: Not a fan.

Piper: Seth isn’t a fan, either. We’ve decided she’s a gold digger, but we’re trying to support Zach.

Derek: Who is Seth?

Piper: He’s my best friend, confidant, and cousin rolled into one. He used to be Zach’s roommate during college.

Derek: So, when is the wedding?

Piper: Today.

Derek: That’s…

Piper: Fast, I know.

Piper: Zach seems to love her, so we’re being supportive.

Derek: When are you coming back home?

Piper: Sunday, do you want to pick me up?

Derek: I can be there tonight.

Piper: You’re bored?

Derek: No, I miss you.

Piper: What have you been up to?

Derek: A friend of mine contacted me. He wants to start a company.

Piper: What kind of company?
