Derek: Only when someone thinks she should stay awake playing late into the night.

Piper: Are we complaining about my music?

Derek: No. In fact, I just bought tickets for next year’s concert at Zankel Hall. You didn’t mention you’ll be playing.

Piper: I’m playing next year?

Derek: You didn’t know?

Piper: G asked if I wanted to play with her and the Philharmonic of… I can’t remember where, but I said, “Yes, add me to a few dates. I’ll even travel overseas for you.”

Piper: I guess that’s one of them.

Derek: Do you know about the EP you just released?

Piper: That, I do. I was bored. Keith and I started playing, and well… there you go. I have new music out.

Derek: I like it.

Piper: We’re recording more music. I’ll send them to you as Pa edits them.

Derek: Who is Keith, by the way?

Piper: Brother number four. Well, he and Kip are three and four since they’re twins. Keith and Kip are starting a band—right after they finish college and can show our parents they’re mature enough not to screw up their lives. Don’t tell this to Pa, but Keith is almost as good as him.

Derek: Why can’t your father know that your brother is a good drummer?

Piper: I like to give him a hard time and say that his son sucks and he’s doing a terrible job with him.

Derek: That’s mean.

Piper: No, you have to keep Pa humble. He swears every drummer he teaches will be the best—which they are—I just want him to challenge himself and keep growing as a mentor.

Derek: You are weird.

Piper: And you just noticed?

Derek: Who else has he taught to play drums?

Piper: Zeke, the former drummer of Sinners of Seattle. Manelik from Too Far From Grace… there are a few more, but they aren’t as famous because their bands didn’t make it big.

Derek: I take it you’re related to Deck, the frontman of Sinners of Seattle?

Piper: That’s my big brother Tucker. Mae and Hayden’s dad.

Derek: You are music royalty. But why don’t you play drums?

Piper: I do. I can play everything like everyone else in my family.

Derek: But you like the violin better?

Piper: It’s the instrument my soul knows the best. But let’s stop talking about me and tell me about the practice and yourself.

Derek: Everything is working well. Stop worrying about it. By the way, remember the patient I had before I came to work with you?

Piper: Yes, the one you helped talk, walk, and all that fun stuff. Is he okay?

Derek: Yes, he reached out to me. It sounds like he’s doing well.
