“Just what? Are you not sure about Mamba’s feelings for you? Or how you feel about him?”

“No, nothing like that. It’s just that I know my brother and his temper. He can be super protective. Remember what happened when he thought that guy was flirting with Lisa?”

Mitzi pulled a pained face. “He smashed the computer monitor onto the floor along with the keyboard and phone.”

“Exactly, and that guy was just trying to buy a gift certificate for his girlfriend, so can you imagine his reaction if he found out I was dating a man he hates behind his back and lying about it?”

“You do have a point, but are you just going to sneak around forever?”

“Mamba said that too.”

“How’s his situation with the Serpents going?”

“Pretty much the same. We’re in this relationship limbo, and I guess that’s why I just want to enjoy what we have for as long as we can.”

“I get it. I’d give anything to feel about someone the same way you do about Mamba.”

“First, you have to stop crushing on my brother. Lisa will never let him go, and honestly, they deserve each other. One’s crazier than the other.” She made a goofy face. “You should have so much better.”

“Are there any more Serpents available?” Mitzi laughed at her words.

Mandy stored the broom in the closet, then slung her arm around her friend. “I don’t know what I’d do without you.” She mashed her lips together. “Sometimes I feel so alone in all this mess.”

“You’re never alone.” Mitzi wrapped her arm around Mandy’s waist. “You’ll always have me.”

Mandy hugged her back, then Mitzi squared her shoulders. “Let’s get out of here and go home. I’m beat.”

“You go ahead, I just want to check the reception area. The last thing I need to hear tomorrow is Lisa complaining.”

“You know what your problem is? You’re too good.”

Mandy shooed her out the door, then headed toward the front of the salon. When all the magazines were straightened and couch pillows plumbed, she stepped back. Satisfied, Mandy walked out the back door, locking it behind her.

She remembered the first night Mamba waited for her in the lot and the guilt she felt for setting him up. Again, she was following her brother’s wishes. Mamba and Mitzi were right. It was time she found her voice and stood up to him—no matter the consequences.

She chirped the car’s locks and reached for the door handle.

“Haven’t seen too much of you around lately,” a rough voice rasped behind her.

Mandy spun around and came face to face with Blaze. The halogen security lights flickered against his glassy, narrowed eyes.

“What do you want?” She inched closer to the door, but Blaze caged her in against the car.

“I know all about your trips to Searchlight.”

Mandy stayed silent, forcing him to say the next words.

“Meeting up with Mamba every week.”

“You’ve been spying on me?”

“I even followed you to that marina in Arizona. How you’ve been going down there spreading your legs and whoring yourself out to that thug biker.”

“That’s a laugh. You calling him a thug.”

Blaze’s fingers gripped her jaw and squeezed. “You’ll fuck him—but me?—you throw aside.”

“Take your hands off me,” Mandy demanded.
