“Best sex you’ve ever had in your life.”

“Let’s not push it. Either way, I need to get in touch with my office right now.” A strange expression formed on her face after she spoke, one that gave me the impression that she wasn’t being entirely honest with me.

She dialed a number, putting her phone to her ear and marching off. Naturally, it was impossible to take my eyes off her heart-shaped ass as she walked away.

Once she was gone, however, my thoughts turned back to more important matters. Namely, the fact that Claire had just taken on as a client one of the most dangerous men on the east coast. Jose was bad news. More than that, I’d seen the way he’d looked at her, that wolfish glare complete with a scheming smile that had left no doubt as to whether or not he wanted more than just Claire’s legal advice.

I knew she was a brilliant attorney. I also knew, however, that there was one thing that Jose liked more than killing—taking young women and making them his, then throwing them away when he was done. If Claire was his next target, I’d have to make damn sure that didn’t happen.

I rose from the couch, snatching up my coal-gray boxer briefs and stepping into them as I made my way over to the window to look out over the city. I remembered that there was also the small matter of the partnership with the cartel. Once the deal was finalized, Jose would no longer be a member of a rival gang. No, that would almost make things too easy. Jose would be a business partner, one with whom my entire damn organization would be joined at the hip.

Fuckin’ hell.

There was no chance that Claire was going to listen to me on the matter of Jose Burciaga. And there was even less of a chance of Jose backing off.

I was going to have to watch over Claire—whether she wanted me to or not.

Chapter 25

Claire

I’d lied to Connor. I hadn’t been at all ready to bring up the Kat situation in front of him after I’d received a text from her. What was even worse, the matter hadbeen lingering in the back of my mind the whole time we’d been together.

I didn’t know what to do. As I put on my clothes in his huge, luxurious bathroom, my mind raced with everything that had happened. First of all, I’d slept with Connor again.

Had I made a mistake? I knew he was dangerous, knew he was a criminal, knew he was someone a woman like me ought to stay far, far away from. But the sex… God, it’d been something else. Each time with him took the first-place prize for “best freaking sex I’d ever had in my life.” How could something that felt so good be bad?

Then there was the matter of Jose Burciaga. The meeting over, I realized that I’d allowed myself to become so wrapped up in the thrill of taking on my very first high-profile case that I hadn’t stopped to think about who I was defending. Was Connor right about Jose? Hell, how did I even know I could trust Connor? For all I knew, he was no better than Jose.

I pushed it all out of my head as I finished dressing, sweeping my hair back and putting it into a simple ponytail. I’d just had the screwing of a lifetime, and now the goal was to make sure that nobody in the office had any reason to suspect that my “client meeting” wasn’t exactly what I’d implied it had been.

“You OK?” Connor spoke to me from the kitchen. He was still in nothing more than his boxer briefs, a cup of coffee in his hand. Just the sight of him standing there, his powerful form on full display, the fabric of his underwear outlining his perfect cock, was enough to make me feel tight down below.

The look of concern on his face made it clear that he was worried about me.

“I’m fine. Just need to hurry back to the office.”

He nodded, taking a sip of his coffee.

“Before you go, there’s one question I need to ask.” As he spoke, he set down his mug and stepped around the kitchen bar, making his way over to me, that sexy little smile taking hold as he closed the distance between us.

“What’s that?”

Connor put his big hands on my hips, pulling me against him.

“How fast can you get back here?”

My whole body tingled at his words, his touch, his stare.

It was a good question. I wanted to see him again, even though part of me thought it wiser to put some distance between us and not get too attached too quickly. With him standing in front of me like that; however, his gorgeous body inches away from me, there was no way in hell I was going to be doing the wiser thing.

“Let me just check in with my boss and see what else I need done for the day.”

“Good answer.” His right hand moved along my hip, traveling to my ass and giving it a slow, firm squeeze. I gasped at his touch, practically squirming with delight at how he handled me.

His hand still on my ass, he leaned in and kissed me one more time, his tongue finding mine for just the briefest of moments, only long enough for a hint of his taste to drift over me. Connor pulled away right at the moment I was ready to give myself over to him once again, as if he could sense simply by the way I kissed him, the way I breathed, how close I was to giving in.

“You little shit,” I said, a smirk on my face.
