“You heard him, men. Get!” Abel appeared beside Roe and started dispersing the crowd. “Go away, you shameless hussies. No sheriff for you.”

Each of the young men laughed, clearly not offended.

Roe frowned, noticing for the first time that the rest of the Hot Mess Club stood nearby. Caden was recording them with his phone while Fawn, Justin, and Grey laughed. Eduardo gave him a sympathetic look.

Realization dawned slowly, and he turned to slap Abel’s arm. “You set me up.”

“What?” Abel asked, eyes comically large. “Would we do that? Are these shameless hussies our family and friends? Do we now owe them ten dollars each?”

“Yes, you do.” Nico elbowed Abel’s side. “Ernie said he didn’t need ten dollars. He figures this will annoy Lacey, so he was happy to flirt for free.”

Roe ignored them, embarrassment burning him from the inside out, eyes stuck on Mack. “I’m so sorry. They tricked me. I was just trying to save your honor. I wasn’t jealous or anything. Why would I be? We aren’t together. We’re just friends, and that’s okay. I’m okay. Are you okay?”

Mack’s lips turned up in a slow, hot grin. He pulled Roe back into his side and lowered his head to kiss him.

It was Roe’s turn to be confused, but Mack’s kiss made him forget why he should be confused. The strong arm wrapped around him didn’t help clarify anything. He just felt safe and cared for andwantedfor the first time in a very long time.

Mack’s tongue slipped into his mouth, aggressive in his desire. Roe moaned and sunk into him, unable to hold anything back. Their noses brushed each other, almost sweetly, while their mouths devoured one another.

“Dad, what are you doing?” Lacey asked, her voice shrill. “People are watching.”

“This is so embarrassing,” Daphne added, groaning. “You guys are too old to suck each other’s faces in public. This is traumatizing. Renee, I’m going to need a bear of my own now. Can you win me that blue one?”

“Get a room, Dad,” Tris said in between his laughter. “Come here, Benji. You don’t need to see all that.”

“Kiss, kiss,” Benji said, giving Mack and Roe a kiss each before letting Tris take him.

Lacey tried to stifle a laugh but couldn’t. “I can’t believe you, Dad.”

Roe’s face felt like it was on fire, and he looked around for any distraction. “How about those food trucks?”

Chapter 7

Mack wasn’t sure what had caused the change between him and Roe, but he was certain that he didn’t mind it one single bit. He followed Roe in a daze, vaguely aware they were headed to the food trucks and were surrounded by Wilsons and Wilson adjacents.

“Lacey,” Ernie said, eyes cool.

“Ernie,” she frostily replied.

Abel snickered and worked with Justin and Caden to push two of the wooden tables near the food trucks together. “Are you two seriously still doing that wholeI love to hate youthing?”

They both glared at Abel.

“Okay, okay,” Abel said, holding his hands up. “Forget I said anything.”

“Lobster rolls?” Roe looked at one of the food trucks, surprised. “They serve lobster at a summer festival?”

“It’s a Maine thing,” Eduardo said, laughing. “They serve lobster everywhere.”

“I’ll get us some,” Mack said, clearing his throat. “Drinks, too.”

Abel winced. “That reminds me. Justin and I are supposed to take over at the pub’s booth in a few minutes.”

Justin groaned. “Come on. Let’s go get it over with. We can have lunch after.”

By the time Mack came back to the table with a mound of food, everyone was seated, and Daphne and Renee had joined them.

Wally scooted over so Mack could sit next to Roe.
