“So, they’re mad atme?” Roe asked, rolling his eyes. “Seriously?”

“Looks like it. The timing of their harassment and the changes in the company match up. Now, we have motive, so we are looking into their connection with the police in Loriston. Everything has happened there, and it is a small county. The local police have been very nonchalant from the start.”

“Okay.” Roe frowned and cuddled deeper in his chair, nuzzling the top of Benji’s head. “Grandpa Roland was friends with the previous sheriff, but they put a new one in several years ago. I don’t know him as well.”

“We will figure it out. You just stay safe in Hobson Hills.”

Roe nibbled his lip for a moment. “Do you think you could have someone pack up the house and ship our things?”

“Why am I not surprised?” Cain asked, laughing.

“Well, you’re moving here too,” Roe said, grinning. “What did you expect?”

“How did you...?Never mind. I don’t want to know. I’ll find someone to take care of the house. We still need to keep your location on a need to know basis. The driver who tried to kill you, Ned Bollinger, is out on bail, but we have someone watching him. I’m worried James and Gabriel will up their game if they find out you are out of the state. James needs the infusion of cash that gaining custody of the kids would give him. He’d have access to your money.”

“That’s his endgame?” Roe swallowed hard, suddenly feeling sick to his stomach.

“I think so.” Cain sighed. “I shouldn’t have said anything. Don’t worry about it, Roe. Take care of yourself and the kids, and let me deal with these assholes.”

“Gladly, but hurry up. I want you to come meet my new friends. We’re the Hot Mess Club, and I really think you should join.”

“Fuck me,” Cain groaned. “You’re already mixed up withthem?”

Mack didn’t makeit home until after dinner, and Roe was a little surprised at how much he missed his presence. And his cooking. Wally was a one‍-‍trick pony, and they couldn’t eat mac and cheese for every meal. Instead, they were left with Roe’s limited skills, so it was chef salad for everyone.

Benji ran to the door as soon as Wally opened it. “Daddy says we bunnies, Macky!”

Mack pulled the little boy into his arms and hugged him. “What’s this about bunnies?”

Roe rolled his eyes. “I made them eat salad for dinner. It had meat on it, for goodness’ sake. You’d think I haven’t been feeding him for three years now.”

“Want pancakes.” Benji pressed his face against Mack’s neck. “Please?”

“Hmm.” Mack grinned at Roe. “Maybe your daddy spends too much time with Arthur.”

Roe gasped and patted the rabbit riding around in his sweatshirt. “A curse upon you for those filthy words.”

Benji sighed dramatically. “I’m hungry.”

Mack gave Roe a searching look. “Well, Daddy?”

“Oh, fine.” Roe stomped his foot. “Feed the little monster, Ian. The others were perfectly happy, I’ll have you know.”

“Come on, beastie. Let’s make some pancakes.” He leaned over and kissed Roe’s cheek. “I’ll have salad if there’s any left over.”

“There’s plenty.”

“It’s game night, Mack!” Daphne called from the living room. “Come play with us!”

“Be there in a moment,” Mack called out.

“Dad, do we still haveCarcassonneand all the expansions?” Lacey darted into the living room. “I think they’d really like it.”

“She said it was Darren’s favorite board game.” Roe smiled softly. “If you don’t mind us playing.”

Mack hugged Lacey, squashing Benji between them. “That’s a great idea, baby girl. It should be in a trunk in the storage shed out back.”

“I’ll dig it out.” She left, heading toward the back door.
