‘A Rhesian shipbuilding components company. Shafts, tubing, general machinery. Much smaller than our components division. I’ve subcontracted to them once or twice when my people have been under the pump. I can’t tell who else owns them, but other parties seem to be involved. So I’ve got Mirage looking into it.’

The two men shared an eyebrow lift.

‘Why the ever loving hell do I feel like we’re in the cross-hairs of the Rhesians in some form or the other?’ Kainan grumbled. ‘First, Prince Occaro last year -.’

‘- When we found out that he was trying to discredit our ship builds by blaming us for the explosion he caused to cover up the assassination of a prince.’

‘Then the Rhesian rat who gave away Selene’s secret presence here during the coup. And don’t forget Harlow’s VX1 assassin on Axuma.’

‘Naam. I remember we thought it was Massimo who’d sent out the Kuaji contract, but it turned out he wasn’t behind it,’ Kage mused.

‘The contract’s owner was anonymous, and we still haven’t been able to crack who it was.’

‘Now this. I have a bad feeling about this Ruben character. And Rinnax Holdings as a whole.’

‘Probably right. Someone on Rhesia, or close to it, is gunning for us. And for our tech.’

‘Who and why?’ Kage barked out.

‘No idea. I’ve got a mind to reach out to the Prime Minister and perhaps King Auban on Rhesus, given I have a working relationship with both of them, but I’ll hold back on that for now. No use ruffling feathers with no proof. Back to this Ruben guy. He give anything away?’

Nada. Tried to get a date with Harlow, though.’

‘You saw this?’ Kainan exclaimed.

‘Naam. Heard it too.’

‘She respond?’

Kage grumbled under his breath. ‘She didn’t exactly play.’

‘You’re vexed. Is that because you don’t want her to consider it at all?’ Kainan’s eyes twinkled with mischief. ‘Selene said something might have been going down with you two when you dropped her off at Axuma.’

Kage huffed, neither confirming nor denying his soul brother’s assertions.

‘She have a boyfriend?’ Kainan continued.

‘Not that I know of. She doesn’t need a boyfriend. Like I told her, what she needs is a man.’

The Sable Riders’ leader reared his head back in surprise. ‘You’ve discussed boyfriends and ‘a man’ with Harlow? Things are getting cosy. You volunteering?’

Kage gave his friend a coy look. ‘Maybe. You and Selene can’t have the monopoly on finding your soul mate.’

Kainan grinned. ‘Soul mate? Brother, I’ve never heard you wax this lyrical about romance!’

Kage shrugged with a wry smile. ‘I’ve got a beating heart, man. I’ve always wondered what it’d be like, to love one woman and have five littletotoswho look just like me.’

‘You had a woman.’

Pained, Kage looked away.

His leader shook his head in commiseration. ‘She wasn’t good for you though -.’

Kage jerked his chin. ‘Don’t I know it? I’m done with all those shits and giggles, women.’

‘Harlow does it for you then?’

Kage shrugged. ‘She’s under my skin. Let’s see how things go.’
