“What?” I mumbled from behind my arms.

“That shit weighing you down is what?” My grandmother didn’t mince her words. Ever. At seventy-eight years young, she had a fiduciary obligation not to sugar coat.

I opened my eyes, looking up at the ceiling. The color contrast from the soft gray walls to the stark white ceiling sparked a memory.

“You ready to bring your patio set in for the winter?”

“Nah. I figure I gotta few more weeks before it’s too cold to sit out there. October’s usually good to me. Now, you! Who done died?”

“Nobody, Grandma.”

“Then it’s Len-Len.”

I laughed. Hard. “Grandma.”

“You seen her, huhn?”

I shook my head, eyes closed. “Yup.”

“Alone.”

“Yup.”

I could hear her distinct teeth suck, or in grandma’s case, her dentures click. “You kiss her again?”

“Yup.”

“And now she back down south with that crackhead, basketball player of hers?

I laughed again.

“Something like that, yeah.”

“What you gone do if she let you smell it?”

Grandma, I did more than smell it. I made a few meals out of it…

And that was what fucked me up. Never in a million years did I think I’d have a chance at Lennox’s body this trip. She even let me spank her, another unexpected miracle. I’ve been wanting her so bad and for so long. I manifested having her back in my life. When it happened three years ago, it boosted my ability to have long term faith, and to focus on specific goals. Manifestation was some real shit.

“She ain’t pregnant by that crackhead, basketball playing husband, is she?” My grandmother’s forceful words of inquiry shot from her weak diaphragm.

I wish that would be the announcement two months from now…

But it wouldn’t. We used condoms, something that felt unnatural with Lennox. Being a single man who travels frequently for a living, and one that does well financially, I did my fair share of fucking. Flavorful, festive fucking. Protection was paramount for a man who had become a father unintentionally at twenty years old. Notwithstanding the gift that was Elia, her conception was such a traumatizing event in my life because of the circumstances surrounding it.

“Well, is she or ain’t she?” My grandmother demanded.

I shook my head again then lifted it from my shoulders while still on my back. Mattie Mae was leaning forward now, in her leather recliner. She was hella curious.

“You’s a nosy old lady, ain’t you?”

She raised her crooked fist in the air and dramatically declared, “Before I close my eyes for the last time, and meet my maker, that child gone be my granddaughter-in-law.”

“Grandma, stop!”

“I’m serious, Tobias. I am. I ain’t never seen no pussy-whipped pup like you a day in my life.” Her face went tight, and I dropped my head back onto the sofa, cracking the hell up. “I ‘clare, you worse than your grandfather when he took me from my first husband. That man followed me around by mysecretions—”

“Grandma!”
