I turned the page and kep reading but those same two questions took turns plaguing my thoughts.

How would she feel about having children?

What kind of mother would she be?

More questions. None of them had answers. We’d barely kissed and here I was planning a future with someone who admitted that she wasn’t even sure about us.

How crazy was that?

ChapterNine

SIMONE

Massimo had left in a hurry after he and Beni had disappeared upstairs. Martina went after him and been gone for awhile. Amina went upstairs, but Beni had yet to surface. Angie and Tim were talking so I excused myself to go upstairs hoping I wasn’t overstepping.

I heard Beni talking as soon as I got to the top of the steps. I couldn’t make out what he was saying, but I knew his voice. Getting to the door, I saw him reading to her while soothing her with a head massage.

“Uncle Ami,” Amina yawned. “I like Ms. Simone.”

“Me, too.” He smiled down at her and it broke my heart.

I could see how much he loved her. It reminded me of how my father used to put me to sleep. He stayed in there reading to her until she was passed out. He didn’t get up immediately, instead he just watched her.

“You’re going to be an amazing woman one day, Amina. Make sure that you stay that way with whoever you choose to be your forever. If he’s not a good man, he’s not for you. Don’t chase someone who isn’t chasing you back. I know you’re too young to understand this now, but one day you will. Understand that I’ll be right here to help until you’re sure. Listen to your mother always, and continue to shine bright, baby girl.” He kissed her forehead and began to stand up.

A tear slipped free from my eyes and I turned to wipe it right as Beni exited the room.

“Simone?”

“Yes?” I faced him after I was sure that my face was free of emotion.

“Everything okay?”

“Yes,” I sniffed. “Max left and so did Martina. I wanted to make sure that everything was okay.”

“It is now. Amina asked me to read her a bedtime story.”

“Okay.”

“Ready to go?” He asked me.

I was but as I watched him, I heard his words again.Don’t chase someone who isn’t chasing you back.

I stood on the tips of my toes and kissed him. I pulled him close with my arms around his neck and took everything I was feeling and put it into it. He was going to be a great father someday. I was glad that Amina had him and Max in her life. They gave her so much love.

“Simone?” Beni pulled away first looking at me.

“Yes?” I hope he didn’t ask me to explain what I was feeling because I couldn’t find the words. Seeing him with Amina had settled some of my concerns about him. I’d witnessed a vulnerability that I couldn’t ignore. It called to me and made me see what kind of man he was. A protector.

“I want you.” He breathed the words out like he’d been holding on to them for a long while.

“Same.” I admitted.

“We should go.” He said, but his hands caressed my hips.

“Take me home, Beni.” I encouraged him.

He growled and led me downstairs. “Have a good night, Tim and Angie.” He said as we were passing them quickly.
