“It had to be believable. People needed to see us together and know that you were one-hundred percent into me. I needed to mark you as mine and then show you off.”

“To who?”

“I can’t tell you that yet.”

I huff. “Why did you turn on me that night? You were a different person, so cold and callus.”

“I had to, Mariella. At that point, I knew I was in trouble. Not with another gang or anything like that, but because I was starting to fall for you. I had no idea how much I’d enjoy being with you and around you. Fucking? Yeah, I can fuck women without feelings. And that’s how it started with you, but then it changed. You and me? We’re fucking made for each other. I know you feel it, too. I’ve never had so much fun and gotten so much pleasure from another person. It was hard keeping up a wall that I wanted to break down myself.

“What I told you was true. Bringing you into this life is dangerous, and today proved that. By being with me, you’ll always be in danger. You’ll always be near death. You will compromise your morals and sometimes maybe even your sanity. It’s not fair of me to ask that of anyone, and it’s exceptionally hard to ask that of you. I know you’re a decent person, but I’m not, and that’s why I’ll still ask.”

He pauses, studying me, waiting for me to chime in and take him out of his misery.

“Go on,” I say.

His lips quirk. “Will you be with me? Even though you know I’m a killer. With the knowledge that you could lose me on any given day. And with the possibility of putting yourself at risk. Because it’s more than just saying yes and us being happy together.”

I go to open my mouth to answer, but he holds up a finger and stops me. “Don’t answer yet. You still have something else to learn, but first, will you kiss me?”

My lips stretch into a smile. “Only because you asked so nicely.”

He growls and grabs my face between his hands, his lips smashing against mine before his tongue slides inside my mouth.

After at least a minute of us devouring each other, he pulls away.

“Myprincesa,” he mutters.

“My…” I trail off, my eyebrows lifting as I realize why he’s been calling me that. “You’re my prince.”

“You’re the light to my darkness.”

ChapterThirty-Six

It’s four in the morning and I’m exhausted, but Vicente is insistent that we go see Donati before going home.

I fall asleep in the car ride over, waking up to Vicente gently shaking me. “We’re here.”

He extends his hand and helps me out of the car, guiding me across a curved driveway that leads to a huge and exquisite home. There’s plenty of windows on both the first and second floor, though all but one is darkened. Trees and shrubbery cover a perfectly manicured lawn.

Before we even get to the door, it opens, and Donati greets us wearing a robe, lounge pants, and slippers.

It’s weird to see him looking like a typical grandpa when earlier I saw him punching the shit out of a bloodied man tied to a chair.

“Come in,” he says quietly, stepping back to allow us inside before he closes and locks the door. “In my study.”

He leads the way to the only room that has a lamp on, emitting a warm glow from the corner. Sitting on the loveseat, he gestures for us to sit on the couch opposite him.

“Want a drink?” he asks me.

“No, I’m good. Thanks.”

“I’ll take a drink,” Vicente says.

Donati eyes him before getting up and pouring some amber-colored liquid into a glass. Once Vicente has it, he just holds it, not bothering to take a sip.

“You wanted the whole story,” Vicente starts. “And here’s where you’ll get it.”

I turn to look at him, confusion marring my features. “What?” I nervously glance at the man across from us. “What are you talking about?” I ask in a whisper.
