“You’reangry withme.”
“Caspe…” I let out an exasperated breath.
“See?” He rose up in the water, tentacles surfacing. “You want to get it on? You want to put a blaster on me? You want—”
“No, I don’t want to do anything to you.”
“So, you want me to restrain you with my tentacles and maybe spank you a—”
“Every fight we have does not have to turn into sex!”
He sank back down into the water, disappointed. “But doesn’t it usually, though?”
I sighed, shaking my head. “Caspe, if we have a baby, who are we even going tobe?”
He was quiet.
I looked up at him.
“You think it’s going to change who we are, sweetheart?” he said in a low voice.
“Don’t you?”
“I think it’s kind of an adventure,” he said. “We don’t know what will happen. But I’m sure we can handle it.”
I licked my lips. “What if… what if it never happens?”
He went still.
I eyed him.
He used his tentacles to pull himself up, dripping, out of the water. He came for me, but I backed away, shaking my head.
“Don’t get me all wet.”
He stopped.
“You know what?” I raised both of my hands. “Never mind.”
“Hey, Sienne, you don’t want to have babies at all?” His voice sounded odd, flattened in some strange way.
“I didn’t say that!” I turned around.
“You can say that,” he said, his voice still that weird flat sound, though. “If that’s how you really feel, I want to know.”
“Youwant babies,” I said, turning back to face him.
“I want you more.” This was immediate, stronger.
I hesitated.
“That can be okay.” He was coming closer, and his voice was gentle now, and his tentacles were coming up around me, all around, reassuring caresses.
“I don’t know.” The truth was, when I thought about being a mother, I felt panicked, but when I thought aboutneverbeing a mother, I felt panicked about that prospect too. “What if I said that now, and then at some point, I changed my mind?”
“Said that you didn’t want children at all right now, you mean?”
“Yeah, but then, like five gecycles from now, I decided I do? W-would you…?”
