I gulped.
A noise, off in the darkness, somewhere far away.
Holston’s head jerked back in that direction.
Suddenly, I saw more antlers. Three pairs.
I sat up straight as three donen men materialized out of the darkness. They moved independently of each other, and they were all in a similar crouched position like Holston was.
Holston sniffed the air, and his eyes widened.
The men all started forward, galloping, fast, blurred movement. They were coming forme.
I stood up straight.
Holston shot out for them, another blur. “Cypra, run!” he cried.
I turned and took off, heading for the ship.
But I couldn’t outrun a donen male. It was an impossibility.
One of them tackled me to the ground immediately.
I fought, struggling, bringing my elbows back into him.
He put a hand on my neck, holding me down. “Feisty thing,” he said in a thick voice.
Oh, stars, he sounded like he was enjoying this.
Blaster!
I had a blaster, what was I thinking?
I fumbled for it. It was strapped to my waist, and I got it out.
He saw it. “Fuck!”
“Back off.” I gestured wildly with the blaster.
He backed off.
I turned, still on the ground, holding the blaster, pointing it at him.
In the distance, I could see Holston’s antlers locked in with another man’s antlers, the two of them sparring with each other. Stars, I hoped he could take care of himself!
“Okay,” I breathed. “I’m going into the ship, and you are going to—”
Movement.
The third donen man appeared, coming for me from my right side.
I jerked the blaster around and pulled the trigger.
Nothing happened.
The power cartridge! I hadn’t charged it. I was such an idiot.
The third donen man tackled me, laughing.
