“I just thought it would wound your pride to not be able to hack it or something.”

“It’s needlessly dangerous up there,” he said. “You were right.”

“Yeah, it really was,” I said.

“I’ve got to report it all to the authorities,” he said. “Put a stop to it.”

“Yeah, that makes sense.” I nodded.

“Besides, I… you… I mean, what if you needed…”

“Needed what?”

He squeezed my hand. “I just… I don’t like being separated from you.”

I drew in a sharp breath. I squeezed his hand back. “I know,” I whispered. “I know exactly what you mean.”

And we didn’t let go of each other, not the whole time we sat in the queue, not when our ship was pulled down for a landing, not when we were safe on the ground.

Jini looked at us, sitting there together, touching.

And I flinched and pulled my hand out of his hand.

And he folded his arms over his chest.

Then we both stood up.

“So, there’s nothing yet from the resistance,” said Jini. “But since this ship is here in this commercial spaceport, I imagine they won’t contact it. We’ll both probably get separate communications from our contacts via bracelet. Until then, I guess we find somewhere to hole up for the night, but it doesn’t need to be together.”

“I guess not,” I said.

“So, uh, thanks, Cypra,” said Jini.

“Yeah, of course. It was my mission.” I paused. “You sure that the resistance knows where we are?”

“Positive,” said Jini. “Let’s get off this hunk of metal, huh?”

We followed her off the ship.

Once we were out in the spaceport, she went her way, and then Holston and I were alone, and we eyed each other.

I took a deep breath. “Um, so how far is this from your home?”

“I can get public transport,” he said. “Probably a few hihors by a public speeder.”

“You going to do that tonight?”

“Uh… I’m going to go report what’s happening near the pole to the authorities,” he said. “After that, it’ll be late, so…”

“Well, you could contact my bracelet if you want,” I said. “We could, um, have another night together.”

He smiled. “Yeah?”

I nodded, smiling too. “Yeah.”

He kissed me. His voice dropped into a lower register. “I’d like that.”

I clung to him. I didn’t want to let go of him.
