“So, why do you think that?”

“She said, uh… ‘Oh, of course she ends up pregnant, even after that bastard Holston abandoned her. She probably doesn’t even want to be pregnant, and of courseshegot pregnant.’”

I furrowed my brow. “That’s not even… Holston doesn’tknow.”

“Oh,” said Caspe in a voice that indicated exactly what he thought of that.

I folded my arms over my chest. “I don’t have to tell him.”

“I think he probably wants to know,” said Caspe, folding his arms over his chest, too, even as he tilted back in the chair at his desk.

“We’re talking about Sienne,” I said.

He snorted. “Nothing more to say about that. We’re having the most polite huge fucking fight ever. I don’t even know what it’s about, but it’s something to do with babies, and everything I say is wrong.”

“Polite fight?”

“Oh, yeah, we’re not yelling at each other or anything, and everything’sfine, except she’s really mad at me, and I can tell.”

“Do you want to have babies?”

“I mean, the thought terrifies me,” he said. “But, uh, yeah. Anything worth doing is terrifying, I figure, right? And Sienne? She’d be an amazing mother, and make up for all the mistakes I’m going to make. And… and… yeah.” He gave me a shy little grin. “Yeah.”

“So, you’ve told her this.”

“I have,” he said. “And she says, ‘Not yet.’”

I nodded. “Okay.”

“But then she gets like this when people are pregnant. You’re not the first person she’s been odd about.” He sighed heavily. “Anyway, try not to take it personally.”

I shook my head. “Well, I can try, but it’s a little bit difficult.”

“So, why didn’t you tell him? He seemed like a good guy. He seemedreallyinto you. You guys barely came up for air when you were with us on that smuggling thing. You were constantly touching, and—”

“Shut up, Caspe.”

He rubbed the back of his neck. “Oh, stars, is he, like, a jerk? Did he hit you or something?”

“No.”

“Oh, good,” he said. “Good, that’s really good.”

“I don’t want to talk about this.”

“Yeah, I didn’t want to talk about the thing with Sienne. Too bad. Why didn’t you tell him?”

“He didn’t want to be here. He didn’t want to be part of the resistance. He has his own whole life. I don’t need to intrude on that.”

“Well, uh, he’s clearly intruding onyourlife, what with his child growing inside you and all.”

“It’smychild.”

“Yeah.” He nodded. “It is. Still, Holston should know. If I had knocked up some woman, and she never told me… what are you going to do when the baby grows up and asks about his dad? Kid’s going to have antlers or something, and what are you going to say?”

“The baby is a girl,” I informed him. “No antlers.”

“Whatever. Even ifshelooks entirely human, she’s going to care about her father.”
