“Oh my god,” I groan. “You are going to kill me.”

“No, baby. I’m going to take you to heaven, and I will be right by your side the entire time.”

ChapterThirty-Five

AVA

Placing the last of my books in the box, I seal it shut with some tape, then push it to the side with the others, ready to be shipped to New York.

It’s been three weeks since graduation, and all the drama that transpired over the last three months is now a distant memory, leaving the path now clear and ready for me to take the next step.

Since the night of prom, Mason and I have become inseparable. Well, more like he refuses to let me out of his sight. The guy is crazy possessive, but deep down, I kind of dig it.

I wake up nearly every morning to find him wrapped around me. I have no idea how he is breaking into my house, but it wasn’t until Dakota got up to get a midnight snack and caught a figure marching up the stairs in the dark that shit really hit the fan.

Her screams not only woke the dead but her very naked boyfriend Joshua, who flew down the stairs after Mason in all his naked glory and attempted to tackle him.

It wasn’t until I turned the lights on that everyone realized who it was. Dakota was confused about why he broke in—when he could have just stayed over. Joshua found the whole thing hilarious, and Mason was just plain pissed off because apparently, I looked at Joshua’s dick.

Okay, well, maybe I did.

In my defense, what is a girl supposed to do when a hot musician stands naked in the foyer of her home? His dick was just begging to be looked at. Besides, it was just a little peek.

Dakota told him right then and there to cut the shit and just move in with us for the summer, but Mason wasn’t keen to share space with other people, so we decided to spend the rest of the summer at the harbor before we moved to New York.

We decided to forgo our dorm rooms and rent an apartment together off campus. It may seem too soon, but it feels right, and sometimes you have to go with your gut. Besides, Mason is already talking about marriage. I stopped that as delicately as I could, but it still didn’t stop him from sulking about my rejection for three days.

We are only eighteen. We have a lot of growing up to do, and as much as I would like to get caught up in the whirlwind of it all, the rational side of me wants to see how we grow together before taking such a huge step.

Luckily his mother stepped in. Well, that was after she recovered from choking on her spaghetti because he decided to bring it up at the dinner table and suggested we live together first and wait until after graduation. It seemed to snap him out of his funk, and he’s made it his mission in life to find us the perfect apartment ever since.

Dakota and I took our mother to the airport the day after graduation for her flight to the rehab facility in California. She was a blubbering mess but promised to get better and return to us as the mother we both deserve.

My father has gone away on business for the next two months. Spencer and Richards are expanding and opening up a new law firm in Portland. With their firm being the best in the Pacific Northwest, more clients were making the drive from Oregon to Washington to seek their representation. So it made sense for them to open a new office there. He is still as absent as ever, even more so now that he is away to oversee the expansion. But he assured Dakota and me that when Mom comes home, he’s going to hire more legal representatives and spend less time at the office, so he can spend more time with my mother and help with her recovery.

I walk over to my suitcase on the bed and double-check I have everything I need when I hear the doorbell ring. Frowning, I glance over to the clock on my nightstand. Mason isn’t due to pick me up for a couple of hours. Zipping up the suitcase, I head out the hall and down the stairs.

The doorbell rings again, more frantically this time.

“I’m coming!” I call out as I reach the door.

Opening it up and expecting to see Mason, I frown in confusion when I see Lyndsey standing there. The confusion quickly morphs into worry as I take in her disheveled state. Her hair is carelessly thrown up into a messy ponytail, and her sweatshirt has a stain on the front like she hasn’t changed in days.

“Lyns?” Her bloodshot eyes meet mine, and my gut churns. I have never seen her look like this. She has always been a pillar of strength, but the girl standing in front of me is anything but.

“C-can we talk?” she stammers nervously.

“Of course.” I open the door wider, and she walks through, heading straight for the stairs and racing up to my room.

I close the door and follow her up. Upon entering my room, I find her pacing back and forth, wringing her hands out in front of her. “Lyns. What’s going on?”

Her eyes dart to mine for a moment before looking around my room and spotting the packed boxes lined up. “You are packing already?”

I follow her gaze. “Yeah, I thought I would get a head start. We are leaving for New York in five weeks, but I won’t be here for the rest of the summer.”

Nodding her head, she looks away and resumes pacing.

“What’s going on? You’re scaring me.”
