CHAPTER8

It’s been a real whirlwind. I’m so lucky that when I slipped into the house, my father wasn’t home, and I grabbed what we needed for the cruise and anything else my mom might desperately need once she moves overseas. Sure, I might’ve been able to grab even more than I had, but I didn’t want to risk my father coming home.

Just one hour ago, we boarded the ship. Now that we’re all settled in the room, I ditch my top and bottoms to reveal my hot pink string bikini.

“I don’t mean to suggest that you cover up entirely, but do you really think you should walk around without something to cover your ass cheeks?” my mom asks.

I huff a sigh. “I guess you’re right.”

I put on the smallest mini skirt I packed and twirl for her.

“Better?”

She rubs her forehead. “I just hope that there isn’t a breeze,” she mumbles.

“I plan on going into one of the pools on the ship, so this skirt is going to be coming off in the presence of others anyhow. In fact, I could just wrap a towel around my waist and walk with that instead of the skirt.”

“If that’s what you want to do,” she says wearily.

I grimace. “Are you tired?”

“A bit,” she says, “but don’t worry. I’ll come with you. I doubt I’ll go in the water, but I definitely have enough energy to lounge around and drink a cocktail or two.”

“And pass out?” I tease.

“I am not going to pass out!”

“Famous last words.”

She sighs and wrinkles her nose. “I don’t like hearing this from you when you’re about to go off to college,” she murmurs, “especially with my going…”

I hold up a hand. “No more teasing you about booze. Got it. Let’s go!”

We head all the way up to the top deck. It’s already crowded, and I head over to the pool that has the least number of kids in it. I’m not much of a swimmer, honestly, but the water is nice and warm, and I find myself enjoying the water and the sun.

Eventually, though, I do climb out and make my way over to the lounge chair next to my mom.

She grins at me and nods to the drink on the small table between our chairs. “That one is yours,” she says, lifting her glass.

I take a sip. A virgin drink.

My mom’s eyes are a little glazed over already, and I laugh. “That one your second?”

“I thought you weren’t going to tease me about booze,” she says.

“Right. Right. So… What do you think about that guy?” I ask, using my cup to point to a guy who looked to be about her age. He wasn’t the most ripped, but he wasn’t chubby.

“Excuse me?”

“Or that one.” I point to a guy in his thirties. “Or do you want even younger?”

“Excuse me?”

“Come on. You can’t go on a cruise vacation and not have a little fun!”

“I am having fun,” she protests. “With you.”

“Nah. I mean, sure, we can have fun together, but that doesn’t mean you can’t find a fuck buddy.”
