Riding along the roads with him laughing and singing along with the radio is one of the most relaxing and rewarding experiences of my life.

Sometimes, he runs some commentary of the places we go by, sometimes we talk about ourselves. I’m starving for information about him, and he’s more than happy to supply it, so I soak it all up.

As we’re cruising the streets, my eyes land on a sporting goods shop. I park in the closest available spot I find, and motion him to join me.

“What do you say we go in there and we buy a few baseball gloves and balls for you and your siblings? We can play catch when we get back if you want.”

His face lights up. “Really?”

“Yes, really.” I grab his hand and we walk side by side to the store. When we enter, Finn gasps. The place is huge.

I head straight to the baseball section. He’s grinning like wild as he tries on gloves. Then we select one for each of the other kids and a few for the adults.

Baseball is an American sport, but the tradition to play ball with your kid is universal. One I can’t wait to enjoy with him.

“Shall we go home now and try these out?”

He hesitates at first.

“What is it, little man?”

“If we go home now, will I be able to ride in your fast car again another time? I...”

“Of course, but why would you ask that, kiddo?”

“I really like going with you. This has been so much fun, I just hope we can do it again, if that’s okay.” He is looking at his shoes as he says this, and I can’t help but burst with happiness

“We can do it as many times as you want, whenever you want, okay?”

His eyes catch mine and they are shining so bright. He nods energetically and bubbles about how much he loves his new glove.

When we get home, we give each of the kids their presents, and Finn and I head to the garden at the front of the house. His siblings went to the back, and we wanted to enjoy each other’s company a bit longer.

He fits his glove and we set a distance from each other that will allow him to easily catch my throws.

After flinging a few balls, back and forth, and laughing a lot at our hits and misses, Finn clears his throat. “May I ask you a question?”

“You may ask me anything you like,” I say truthfully. I want him to get to know me just as much as I want to get to know him.

“You have the same eyes as me.”

I gulp.

Looking around, I try to spy Carra. This conversation should include her, if it goes where I think it is.

“I do. You have very cool eyes.” I continue to surreptitiously but frantically look for Carra.Come on, baby, come out here.

“I know Cha-cha is my mom, as is Momma Nikki.”

I nod. I’m starting to panic. I don’t want to lie to my son, and I don’t want to dismiss him right now. This is something that he has been thinking about and he deserves answers, I just wish Carra was here for this too.

“Guys, ready to eat some pizza?” comes the most beautiful voice in the world, and my body almost sags in relief.

I look up at Carra and call her over. “In a second, sweetheart. Can you come here, please? Finn has some questions for us, don’t you, Finn?”

He hesitates, looking at his feet.

“It’s okay, kiddo. No one will be mad, and I promise to answer all your questions, okay?” He looks between me and Carra shyly before tentatively nodding once.
