“Much better. Thanks for the ice,” I smile.

He’s made hamburgers, beans, and corn on the cob but at this point, I could have eaten anything. I dig in and the first bite hits my empty stomach like a gift from the heavens. I try not to make a pig of myself, but the hunger gets the better of me and I don’t stop eating until I’ve consumed every bite.

“Would you like some more?” he asks.

The truth is that I could eat all over again, but I tell him no. He takes the dishes to the kitchen then returns and sits beside me on the sofa.

“I know you’re tired, but I need something from you now,” he says.

At this point, I’d give him anything he asked for.

“Carrie, tell me about the night that Ashley died.”

I heave a deep, sorrowful breath. “We were getting coffee at the shop off campus that morning and some guys outside invited us to a party. They gave us the address of the house, and we talked about it all day. Should we? Shouldn’t we? We figured we’re only young once and things like this are part of the college experience, so why not? If we went together, we could just leave if it was too wild, right? Stupid…” I wipe the tears from my eyes and sniffle.

“It’s alright, Carrie. What happened when you got there?” he leads me.

“Everything was fine at first. The house was gross but there were a lot of people there, so we thought that it would be safe.”

“Did you know anyone there?”

“I only recognized the guys that invited us, and they were really nice. We were having a good time until some other guys showed up. They were older and brought in a bunch of drugs. They were selling them to the people at the party. One of the guys was trading drugs for sexual stuff right there in front of everyone. I didn’t feel comfortable around that so I tried to find Ashley so we could leave.”

This part is hard so I chew my bottom lip and will myself to continue. “Somebody must have drugged her because she was out of it. She couldn’t even walk and I was scared. I found one of the guys and asked him to help me with her, but the older guys heard me and just laughed. They said Ashley wasn’t going anywhere until they were done with her.

“They started grabbing her and pulling her clothes off. Even drugged, she was putting up a fight. Most of the other people left when they saw what was happening. The others just moved to another room so they could ignore it. Nobody would help her so I tried to help her.

“I ran at them and tried to push them off her, but one of them shoved me so hard that I fell backward into the wall. I hit my head so hard that I passed out. When I woke up, they were gone and Ashley was dead. She was naked with her throat cut. All I can think is that they must have thought they killed me, too. Why else was I still alive?”

I break down and my body heaves as the tears stream down my face. Chris puts his arms around me and pulls me close to his chest. He strokes my hair and hushes me. I wrap my arms around him and hold on for dear life. Finally, I regain some composure and sit back up.

“What happened after you regained consciousness?” he asks gently.

“I saw Ashley and ran out the front door. I thought everyone was gone, but two of the men were on the front porch. They saw me and screamed for me to stop, but I just kept running and didn’t look back. I ran all the way to the Fifth Street bar.

“There’s a waitress there who’s always been nice to me. I begged her for help, and she took me home with her. The next night after her shift, she told me that those guys came into the bar looking for me. She said that they were bad news and that they wouldn’t risk going to jail. They’d kill me if they ever saw me again, so I’ve been hiding ever since.”

I try to fight it, but I can’t help breaking down again. I guess I’ve held this inside me for so long that it has taken on a life of its own. He holds me again and tells me, “It’s alright, you’re safe now. They never get anywhere near you. I’ll take them down first.”

I look into his eyes, and he takes my face in his hands. I need him to kiss me now. I look down at his lips and wet my own, anticipating the moment of connection. He must sense my desire because he presses his lips against mine and kisses me deeply. I practically climb into his lap as I wrap my arms around his neck. I don’t want him to ever stop.

He lies back on the sofa, pulling me on top of him and pressing my head down on his chest. He rubs my back and strokes my hair until I fall asleep to the sound of his heartbeat.

CROSSING BOUNDARIES

CHRIS

Iknow that I shouldn’t have kissed her, but as I lie here with her asleep on my chest, I realize that there was no way I could have controlled myself.

From the moment she came down the stairs braless in that thin white t-shirt, my rock-hard erection refused to allow me to think about anything else. Then, touching her bare midriff and watching her shirt ride up to expose the bottom of those full, round mounds left me doomed from the start.

Besides, she wanted it so badly, how could I have denied her? She was distraught with her wounds laying wide open. If I had refused to give her the one thing that she needed to console her, she might have shut down on me. At least that’s what I’m telling myself so I don’t have to face the fact that I’m already enamored with her.

I don’t want to leave her but the longer I lie with her, the harder my cock gets. I lift her off me and lay her back down on the sofa. I get a blanket from the closet and cover her then go upstairs to drown my desires in a cold shower. With the day she’s had, she’ll be out for the night but, to be safe, I decide to sleep in the recliner. I’d hate to wake up to find that she stole my car and drove to Mexico.

* * *

I try notto make too much noise, but Carrie hears me in the kitchen and wakes up anyway. She stretches and her shirt rises up, exposing her bruised midsection.
