“What wasIthinking?” she repeats, and he finds he enjoys the soft lilt of her voice, even when laced with fury. “The entire city will be after you! You stole my car! What do you mean, what wasI thinking?”

Her voice trembles.

“It’s past midnight,” he snaps, irrationally angry at her reckless decisions. “You were in a restricted area. Do you have a death wish?”

It doesn’t matter, he thinks to himself. You have a job to do.

He shifts uncomfortably in his seat, memories flooding him as he drives the lone road back towards the city.

A place he hasn’t been in years.

A place he once calledhome.

A city that betrayed him.

“No, I don’t have a death wish,” she whispers. “Not that it’s any of your business.”

Everything about you is my business, the dark part of him whispers. Her scent fills up the car with violets and spun sugar, and he rolls the window down, choking out a shaky breath.

Even through his mask, she’s affecting him.

Fuck.

He knew this would be difficult, but he didn’t expect to be trapped in a car with an Omega, after not seeing one foryears.

He can’t stop glancing at her and frowns as she pushes herself as far as she can against the side of the door, biting her lip.

She’s shaking, her fear of him evident in the way her scent spikes with sweetness.

“I wouldn’t have had to tie you up if you didn’t try to run away,” he offers lamely.

“What are you going to do with me?” she whispers. “Why are you here?”

“Which question to you want me to answer first?” he bites back, and she sniffs, refusing to look at him.

Fine.

“You’ve been lied to,” he says simply, focusing his gaze back on the road. They have around another forty minutes before they reach the heart of the city. “I’vebeen lied to.”

She still doesn’t turn her head, instead choosing to focus all her attention on the dark road.

“As to what I’m going to do with you,” he murmurs, stealing another glance at her.Fuck, she’s beautiful. “I don’t know. Not yet.”

It’s not the answer she wants, but it’s the only one he’s going to give her. If she insists on being difficult, he can be, too.

Why was she out there alone?

“They’re going to kill you,” she whispers after a moment of silence. “They’ll kill you the minute they see you.”

He scoffs. “Lincoln City’s priority is evacuating and protecting their Omegas. That’s always been the plan. Evacuate first, kill later.”

She struggles in vain against the zip ties. Fuck, it makes him look like an even bigger asshole than he already is, and he’s regretting his choice.

But she wouldn’t stopmoving, and she would place herself in more danger if she ran from him.

“The Beta army is hours away, and they’re hardly a concern,” he adds. “If they even bother to show up.”

She shivers. “Let me out,” she whispers. “Please, I won’t tell anyone.”
