He scoffs. “Now that,” he says, amused, “is alie.I can’t have you ruining my plans. Again, Ididn’twant to drag you along, but you were in the wrong place at the wrong time, for some insane reason.”

“Fuck you.” There’s no malice behind her words, and she sounds exhausted.

She’s right, though. It’s possible they could open fire on him, especially if the others turn on him.

But he’s hoping that Draven and Reid swayed the other Alphas to his side; if they don’t want to follow him, at least they can protect him by not attacking.

It’s a bigif,though.

He knew the risks with this. He could lose his life at any second, and if he does, hopefully someone else will take over for him.

But now that he has an Omega in the car with him, he can use her for leverage.

He doesn’twantto, but he knows it’s much less likely he’ll be shot at if she’s with him.

Speaking of…

“What’s your name?” he asks.

She ignores him, but he can hear her teeth chatter as she shivers in fear.

It’s frustrating.

“Do youreallythink I’m going to hurt you?” he demands, pulling them off onto the side of the dirt road. There are no other cars for miles and the closest lights are far off in the distance.

She closes her eyes and presses her cheek into the window, her entire body tensed.

“Look at me.”

He practically snarls at her, but it has the desired effect. She turns her head back toward him reluctantly, her dark brown eyes wild with unease.

“I’m. Not. Going. To. Hurt. You,” he says slowly, meeting her frightened expression. “I know what they told you. I know what they toldmebefore I presented. I remember all the shit they taught us. But that’s not happening here.”

She still doesn’t believe him, judging by her quiet, shaky breathing, but he continues.

“If I wanted to kill you or if I wanted to hurt you, I would have done it already.”

It sounded much better in his head, he’ll admit.

She gapes at him, her lovely mouth falling open in shock. “Is that supposed to make me feel better?” she demands, her voice cracking.

“No. It’s supposed to help yourealizewhat’s going on. That you’ve been lied to, and that Lincoln City and the rest of the United States are full of shit.”

The sirens ring in the distance as a constant reminder of the chaos he’s caused. The only light comes from the center console, and he memorizes the contours of her face as she processes what he says.

For a moment, her gaze softens, and he wonders if he’ll gain an ally. But then her brow furrows, and she scowls.

“I’m not interested in your psycho manifesto, you fucking freak!”

He blinks in surprise, then puts the car back into drive.

“You have a filthy mouth on you,” he mutters, turning his attention to the road. “I thought Omegas were supposed to be more eloquent.”

She grumbles something under her breath, and it almost makes him smile.
