“Just stop talking, you don’t—”

“LET HER GO!”

They both freeze at the sound of another voice.

CHAPTER 27

HAZEL

She shouldn’t have ignoredthe banging earlier, because now the room is full of Betas, who have their guns drawn on Abel.

But they’re not military. They’re not police.

They’re civilians dressed in rumpled, casual clothes.

Adrenaline rushes through her body as she stares at them, Abel’s grip on her wrists still tight. He regards them coolly, unfazed by the men with a ridiculous amount of weapons pointed at them.

“Fucking Alphas!” one of them shouts. His hair is greasy, and he sports an overgrown, unkempt beard as he spits at Abel. “Trying to hurt our Omegas! Trying to ruin our country!”

“I advise you to keep your weapons pointed away from her,” Abel replies, his voice low and steady, as if there are notfourmen with their guns trained on both of them.

One has a phone out, recording the altercation. “Miss, has he hurt you?” he demands in a raspy voice. “Has he touched you?”

Hazel can’t think. She can’t speak. She’s never seen so many weapons in her life, and she trembles as she clings to Abel.

“We can help you,” another continues. “He’ll pay for what he’s done, we promise.”

“Keep recording,” Abel says, pulling her closer. She grounds herself to his voice, gripping his hand tightly. “Let the world see what you’re doing.”

Someone is going to get shot, and Abel is too fucking calm.

“Miss, you need to come with us,” another one says. “There are a lot of people waiting for you. Yourfamilyis waiting for you.”

Wait. That doesn’t seem right. She hasn’t talked to her family in years.

“We’ll take you out of the city,” another one says. “There’s help for you, after what he’s done. He won’t hurt you anymore.”

She blinks. She still can’t speak.

I’m in shock.

“Put your weapons down,” Abel says calmly, and she’s relieved to hear his voice. At least someone knows what they’re doing. “Your aim is off. You’re going to hit her, and I promise whatever happens after that won’t be good.”

He’s talking to them like a negotiator, as if they’re the ones acting absurd.

It happens quickly after that. She’s shoved against the control panel, torn away from Abel as a series ofpopsring out.

Gunshots.

She covers her ears in pain, sliding to the ground as strong arms hoist her up.

Arms that aren’t Abel’s.

Muffled yelling. More pain in her ears.

Someone is screaming. It might be her.

She sees Abel on the ground, clutching his side and grimacing.
