FromherAlpha.

There’s a high-pitched sound echoing off the walls of the main lobby, and she wonders what inhuman creature is making the noise.

“She’s in shock,” one of them says, and she realizes the sound is coming from her. The man’s cell phone is back, the camera lens pushed into her face as a voice speaks. “Look at what these monsters do to our citizens. Look at the terror and pain on her face.”

It feels disgusting. It’s foul and violating, and she angles her head, so her expression isn’t directly facing the cell phone.

“This iswhathappens when Lincoln City allows Alphas nearourOmegas!”

This is all wrong.

“Shut up,” she whispers. “I need you to stop talking.”

He doesn’t. Even after they enter the elevator, Cell Phone Man continues his spiel, speaking excitedly and passionately about Hazel’s “rescue.”

The other three Betas chatter with each other, mostly arguing about what they should have done with Abel.

When they exit the building, one finally turns his attention back to her.

“You don’t owe him your sympathy,” he says, his dark blue eyes studying her curiously. His grip on her isn’t harsh, and he simply guides her towards the waiting SUV. “You know that, right? Whatever he did to you wasn’t your fault.”

His voice is kinder than the others, and she finds his expression to be open and earnest. “My little sister is an Omega, and if that had been her—”

It pains her throat to speak, but she’s glad she does. “He didn’t hurt me,” she says. He frowns as he holds open the backseat of the vehicle for her, but she stays standing. “What you think he might have done to me…he didn’t.Noneof it.”

His frown grows. “You were his hostage, so it’s possible—”

“Hey!” Cell Phone Man barks. “We got to get her out of here. Get her inside.”

Their conversation ends abruptly as she’s ushered into the SUV.

She cries the whole way out of the city, and she lets the others believe it’s from relief.

CHAPTER 28

ABEL

They took her.

He had been in no position to fight; he drew his weapon quickly but didn’t manage to get a shot off.

But if he had attempted to engage, Hazel would have gotten caught in the crossfire.

He let the bullets hit him and penetrate his vest. If he hadn’t shoved her out of the way, he’s not certain she would have been unharmed.

It wasn’t his first time being shot, and he doubts it will be his last.

Yet his girl and her clever mouth managed to save his life. They just fuckinglefthim instead of killing him.

She’s incredible. He had expected her to rush into the Betas’ arms and beg for their help, but instead, she looked at him in horror, visible panic on her face.

Had she wanted to stay with him?

The pain makes his head swim.

He did what he set out to do. Now he can only hope that his actions were enough.

But he has to see Hazel one last time. She may hate him after what he’s done, but it can’t end likethis. He wants her rage, wants every fucked-up scrap of emotion she’ll give him.
