“The person that helped Ava leave Lincoln City unharmed.”

She sucks in a breath.

“You probably hate me,” he continues, “and you have every reason to. But I know where Connor is, and I need your help to save him.”

She doesn’t hate him, but she doesn’t correct him.

“Help how?” she asks softly.

“I have a feeling he’ll listen to you, as I doubt he would go with me willingly. They’re holding him at a laboratory without his parents.”

His words horrify her. “What?Why?”

“To figure out if he’s presenting. As far as Draven could find out, they were simply doing blood tests and monitoring him closely.”

“He’s just a child,” she whispers, repulsed.

“I know. If he’s there, Draven will bring his parents to meet us at the lab.”

“This is all so fucked up.” She puts her face in her hands and wills her despair to go away so she doesn’t start crying again.

“We’re going to get him out,” Abel promises. “Wewill.”

They drive uninterrupted for hours, avoiding all the major freeways. They take backroads until they’re further outside of the cities than she’s ever been, close to the state border.

A current of anxiety flows through her body during the drive, keeping her awake and alert.

She’s anticipating the police to show up at any minute, despite Abel’s reassurances.

Despite what her traitorous inner Omega says, she still doesn’t trust him completely.

But they’re going to rescue Connor, which is more than she could have hoped for.

But what happens after that?

A sudden cramp makes her gasp, and she shifts uncomfortably in her seat.

Absolutelynot. There is no possible way she’s going into Heat again this quickly.

“We’re getting close,” Abel says. “You should rest while you can.”

She opens her mouth to retort, but he interrupts.

“Hazel. Relax.”

When he commands her like that, it’s easy to obey. Her eyes close and she dozes until the car comes to a stop.

When she opens her eyes, it's nighttime.

They’re parked outside of a small industrial building with no light coming from the inside. Barbed wire surrounds the area and Hazel sees a caution sign on the front of the chain link fence, much like the one near the military island.

“Connor’s in here?” she whispers. Her body feels a bit more rested, but the underlying cramps still plague her.

She can’t afford to let them distract her.

“He was here as late as this morning,” Abel confirms, opening the car door. He walks to her side of the car and opens her door, taking her hand and helping her out of the vehicle.
