She ignores the rush of electricity when they touch, and her fingers intertwine with his subconsciously.

“This place looks abandoned.” The wind is chilly, and the sweatshirt she’s wearing hardly blocks out the cold. If Connor is in that building with no power, he must be freezing.

It makes herfurious.

“It’s possible they left in a hurry, leaving him behind,” Abel says, staring at the building. He squeezes her hand in reassurance, but it doesn’t stop the ache in her heart.

She shakes her head. “How?Why?”

“Because a dead child can’t tell the truth about what happened.”

Don’t cry. Don’t you dare fucking cry.

“So, what’s the plan?” she whispers, doing her best to not let her voice waver.

“Get him out and try to get him back to his parents. Well, that’s whatyou’lldo.”

She frowns. “Why just me? What about you?”

For the first time, he looks nervous and hesitates before he speaks.

“If you bring him back, you can tell the police that I was the one that instigated everything. They won’t charge you. You’ll be innocent in all of this, and a hero,” Abel says, a small smile on his face.

Her mouth falls open. “Wait. What are you saying?”

“Use me as an alibi,” he says. “I killed that cop. I kidnapped you and tried to take Connor, too. But you escaped and brought him back to his family.”

She gapes at him, and he reaches out with his free hand to caress her face. “It’s not far from the truth. Ididkidnap you and make you my hostage.”

His eyes are sad, the icy blue irises weary. “I have places I can go. The border is not too far from here. Canada may grant me asylum. If not…I did what needed to be done.”

She’s stunned.

Alpha is leaving!

It should relieve her. He’ll be out of her life, and all of this will be forgotten.

Connor will be safe, and she won’t be in any trouble.

Yet a wave of nausea rolls through her.

Without warning, he releases her hand and cradles her face. “Meeting you was the best thing that’s ever happened to me,” he says solemnly. “You reckless, crazy, ridiculousgirl.”

He leans in and kisses her, gentle and sweet.

It feels like a goodbye.

There’s no question that she’s his mate, but after everything he’s done, he doesn’t deserve her.
