Her resentment of him would fester and turn into something that would ruin them both.

He memorizes her lips with the kiss, inhaling her scent and allowing it to wash over his senses.

If things were different, they could have had everything.

Even as his inner Alpha roars, desperate to fight what he’s doing, he knows it’s the right choice.

His Rut will start any day, and he refuses to allow his Alpha instincts to dictate his actions when it comes to her.

If he had it his way, he would drag her kicking and screaming past the Washington border and live on the run with her forever.

But she doesn’twantthat, even as she returns the kiss, pressing her body against his.

Honey. Sugar.

Home.

He’s the one to break the embrace. He pulls away from her breathlessly, and she continues to stare up at him, her eyes glassy in the moonlight.

“So, after this, you’re leaving?” she squeaks. He clears his throat and nods, his chest constricting in pain.

Take her with you.

He wants to. Fuck, how hewantsto.

“I’ve done what I needed to do, Hazel,” he says calmly, despite the storm of emotions in his heart. “There’s no place for me here. I’m dead if I stay.”

He’s confused by her reaction and the vulnerability that shines in her eyes. For a moment, it looks as if she might cry, but a dark expression crosses her features, and the moment is ruined. “Then we better hurry up,” she snaps, her eyes narrowed. “Tell me what I need to do.”

He wants to question her sudden mood change, but there’s not time.

“Just follow me,” he says.

After he picks the lock to the fence, she follows him to the entrance of the building and watches as he starts to work on the main door.

“Is there anything youdon’tknow how to do?” she mutters as he works at the lock with a thin piece of metal.

“I can’t whistle,” he says distractedly, working the lockpick, “if that makes you feel any better. They never taught us how to do that.”

She scoffs when the door opens.

“So, they just, what? Trained you to be super humans capable of everything, then kept you on the islandjust in casethey might need your skills in some war?”

“That’s what I’ve been telling you this whole time,” he replies, leading her down the dark hallway. “And to keep us complicit, they used your scent. They made us addicted to Omega pheromones.”

It’s not the ideal time to have this conversation, but it's better late than never, he supposes.

The building is too quiet. He flips a switch he finds on the wall and dim light floods the area.

“They were worried Connor was an Alpha,” her voice says quietly behind him, and he turns to look at her.

She’s staring straight ahead down the dim corridor, speaking mostly to herself. “They had us tell the children it would be an honor to serve in the Alpha military, and that Connor was lucky if he happened to present early.” Her voice wavers.

He scoffs in disgust. “Of course they did. They tried to tell me the same thing when I presented. How my life would change, and it would be for the greater good. How I was a hero.”

The memories make him ill.

She looks at him strangely.
