“So, you were in school, and they just removed you?” Audrey asks.

Julian quirks an eyebrow. “That’s how it worked. You present, you leave.”

When she remains silent and frowning, he continues. “You knew that, baby. Why are you asking?”

“I…” she trails off and shakes her head. “It’s hard to imagine. I didn’t realize that they could do that. I thought they would at least let you finish school.”

He chuckles. “Of course not,” he says. “They need their super soldiers to fight against imaginary enemies.”

She glances up at the television, and the headline makes her sick.

Omegas to report back to their designated cities.

“Oh, no,” she whispers. “Why? I thought, at least for now, Omegas could stay where they wanted.”

Julian shrugs. “It looks like the powers that be decided against that.”

Pearl chirps, unaware of the existential crisis her owner is going through, and nuzzles her chin into Julian’s hand. He gazes at the feline fondly, giving the cat a small smile.

She watches Julian, nausea churning in her stomach.

Where is she supposed to go? What is she supposed to do?

She can’t go to one of those places. She justcan’t.

This time, she cannot compartmentalize. There’s only horror as she realizes she doesn’t have a plan.

“Come to Canada with me.”

She snaps her head up to look at Julian. “You can’t be serious,” she mutters.

Pearl leaps out of his lap, and he turns to look at Audrey. “You know I am. We could have a new life together.”

“I have a life,” she whispers.

“Audrey, I’m not asking,” he murmurs, and she backs away from the couch as his gaze intensifies. “We’ve talked about this, baby. It’s just me and you, now.”

The words make her heart flutter, but she still argues with him.

“No, Julian, I’m not leaving thecountrywith you.”

He stands up slowly and starts walking toward her, his gaze softening. “Baby, listen to me—”

“No.You don’t tell me what to do.No one does,” she snarls, her hands shaking. Her box of emotions rattles and is seconds away from bursting.

She can only shove everything aside for so long.

“They will godoor to dooruntil they find every Omega,” Julian states. “And I can’t let that happen.”

“You don’t know that,” she insists, but her eyes dart to the television again.

The Canadian Prime Minister is holding a press conference, condemning the actions of the United States.

No, please no.

“We’ll leave now,” Julian continues. “Pearl will come too, of course. And when all of this dies down, Mindy can come visit you.”

Audrey’s eyes widen in horror at the mention of her sister’s name. “What did you say?” she whispers.
