“Keelin, from the band Ruin,” I say, remembering now that we toured with his band for a few months, and that was how Wade met Adam. “I’m sorry, I’m just a little…”

“High?” he finishes for me.

I laugh, wiping my watery eyes.

“What are you doing here?” I ask, looking around and hoping I don’t see Adam, or God forbid, Wade. I don’t want either of them to see me like this. Although, everyone will see once they post those pictures in the media. “Is Adam with you?” I ask.

“We’re in town for a few days, playing some clubs.” He shoves his hands inside his pockets as if to give them something to do. “Adam left the band. I sing lead now,” he says proudly. I knit my brows together but I’m relieved.

His hair flutters around his shoulders in brown waves, and through the darkness I can see his deep blue eyes like the midnight sky above us. I want to touch his hair, and run my fingers through its softness.

“You have better hair than me,” I remark as I stare at him, my fingers itching to touch it.

He laughs, and the sound tingles in the space between us.

“Keelin! You coming?” someone in the distance yells.

Keelin doesn’t move his eyes from me when he yells back. “You go ahead. I’ll catch up later.”

“You don’t want to go inside?” I ask.

“No.” He shakes his head, his lip quirking up at the corner in a shy smile. “I’d rather be out here with you.”

I smile at him, swaying to the music I can still hear in the distance. It’s mesmerizing, and I swear I can see Keelin’s aura, a haze of blue around him that pulses and changes colors from red to blue and back again. I feel like I’m on fire and my skin tingles. I want to kiss him.

So I do.

Keelin is surprised, his lips rigid at first until I beg him with my mouth to open for me, and he does. His hand is cool against the back of my head, his breath shaky, and his lips are soft. Not as soft as the girl’s lips, but still nice. I finally get to touch his hair, run my fingers through it; gathering it into my fist and pulling until he groans.

He gathers my body to him like a delicate flower you would hold in the palm of your hand, afraid to crush it. He is too gentle with someone like me. I deepen the kiss, pushing my body further into him, and notice I’m making him hard. He can’t hide that from me.

He breaks our kiss to say, “You’re high.” I frown.

“I’m on Molly.” I cock an eyebrow at him.

Keelin laughs.

“Have you ever taken it?” I ask him, guessing he hasn’t if he’s worried about me not being in my right mind to consent. If anything, molly lets you become your true self.

Keelin shakes his head bashfully.

I dig into my skirt pocket and pull out an extra pink pill. Keelin eyes it in the palm of my hand as I hold it up to show him. Just as he reaches to take it, I pull it away from his grasp and shake my head. His eyes grow wide as I take the pill and place it on the tip of my tongue holding it out for him to take.

His pupils dilate as they focus on the pill. He dips his head down and scoops the pill from my tongue, swallowing as he kisses me. This time, he pulls me roughly to him, hands bracing my back, his mouth hungry. In the distance there are sirens, the red and blue aura around him gets stronger.

I take his hand and we run.

CHAPTER THREE

I Destroy Things

THE BEACH AT night compared to daytime has a whole different vibe, the ocean more ominous, the sand biting at our feet. There are no families, no people sunbathing, no kids wading in the water, or surfers in the distance. The waves have settled, lapping at the sand like the shake of a bedsheet floating on air before settling onto the mattress. The water twinkles like a dark beast winking at me, begging me to come further in and find it.

Keelin grabs my hand before I can get too far into the water, pulling me back. “It’s not real,” he tells me, as we walk further away.

“You see it too?” I ask, wondering if it was just me.

He doesn’t answer. Instead, he sits down on the sand, pulling me with him. The sand holds memories of the sun beating on it all day. Keelin grabs a handful and filters it through his fingers, fascinated by the grains falling through the air as if by magic.
