She shrugs. “Some kids at my school have boyfriends or girlfriends.”

He shoots her another warning look. “You’re too young.”

“Does Colton have a brother, Willow?”

“Mia, that’s weird.”

“But I want someone like him.”

“Too young,” Dad repeats.

Mia grumbles.

“I really need to go. Colt’s waiting.” I finish my last bit of toast and hurry to the closet for my jacket. Dad meets me at the door. “Sweetheart, Mom told me you like a boy?”

“Ugh, Dad.”

“You don’t have to talk to me about it if you don’t want to, but I want you to know that I’m here.” He laughs nervously as he plays with his hair. “Honestly, I’m not sure how I feel about you liking boys…”

“Dad, don’t.” I glance at Mia before lowering my voice. “I’m only Colt’s fake girlfriend. I didn’t tell Mia the truth because she can be a little blabbermouth sometimes. But you don’t have to worry about me liking boys because it’s all fake.”

Oh, how much you lie, Willow Park.

Dad frowns. “That’s not what your mother told me.”

“It’s whatI’mtelling you. Colt and I will never be real. Okay?”

His frown deepens. “Now I don’t know how to feel. I’m glad you’re still my little girl, but I want you to be happy.”

I press my lips to his cheek. “I’m happy just being single old me. Now I really need to run.”

“Okay. Have fun at school.”

Sure. Fun at school. Seeing Colt and not feeling…stuff.

He’s waiting near the passenger door when I step out of the house. As soon as he sees me, he smiles and opens the door for me. I thank him and get inside, my shoulder brushing against his arm. It causes a shiver to pass through me.

Once he’s seated, we both just stare at the windshield.

Will he bring up the match? Should I? I don’t want to if it doesn’t mean anything to him.

He looks at me and laughs. “So…good morning.”

I laugh awkwardly. “Good morning.”

“Anything…interesting happen?”

“Interesting?” Is he alluding to the match?

“Yeah…you know. Interesting.”

“No. What about you?” I ask.

He’s quiet for a few seconds before saying, “No. Nothing interesting to report.”

“Okay…good.”

“Yeah. Good.”
