“We were not bad at all,” Chloe says. “Not like Rylee, Zoey, and Mia.”

“Is your sister’s punishment lifted?” I ask her. “My parents have freed Mia from her prison, but she’s still going to help out around the house and at the restaurant because she needs discipline.”

“Helping out at Ji-Ho’s doesn’t seem like a punishment to me,” Lily says. “I love the place.”

“Yeah, but would you want to be the dish pig?”

“Sure. The dishes need to be cleaned, don’t they? It might seem mundane, but it would fulfill me because it’s a vital job at a restaurant.”

“Let’s see if you feel the same way after doing it for two weeks straight,” I say.

We all laugh.

“So, Willow,” Lily says in a playful tone. “What’s the latest with you and your boyfriend?”

“Fakeboyfriend.”

“Yeah, yeah. You guys have spun Edenbury High on its axis. The most popular guy at school with…”

I lift my brow. “The biggest nerd and geek at school?’

She frowns. “I’d never call you that.”

I shrug. “We know we’re nerds, and we own it. And I’m a tech geek and I own that, too. You guys know I don’t care what any of those kids think. This is just a means to an end.”

“How many more downloads?” Ava asks.

“Two hundred and thirty-nine since I last checked. And counting.”

“Nice.” Chloe puts her arm around me. “I’m so glad things are going well.”

“And you know how popular you’ll be once kids at school get paired up with their perfect matches?” Lily says. “They’ll worship you.”

I wave my hand. “I don’t care about that. I just want to win the competition.”

Lily knocks her shoulder into mine. “Doesn’t playing cupid make your heart dance? Willow, you’re bringing together two souls whobelongwith each other. That has to feel amazing.”

“We’re not holding there yet, but I guess it would feel good,” I muse. “Ever since I was a kid, I wanted to create apps that would make people’s lives better.”

“And you will.” Chloe hugs me. “Like Lily said, you’ll change the world one day, for the better.”

“Does that mean if your app is a success here, you’ll try to get it out there in the world?” Ava asks with huge eyes. “Because that would be awesome.”

I hold up my hand. “That’s way too far in the future.”

“We’re getting sidetracked,” Lily complains. “I want to know how things are going with the king.”

I shrug. “Nothing’s going. We don’t hang out outside of school. And you know he drove me to school this morning.”

“That was so sweet of him,” Chloe says.

“Yeah. I had no idea how cool he is. I guess I misjudged him.”

Lily knocks her shoulder into mine again. “You think?” she jokes. “Looks like popular kids can be kind people too.”

Yeah, but it’s more than that. Colt hides his true self from everyone. I still have no idea why he does it—he claims I wouldn’t understand. It’s a foreign concept to me why someone would want to change for another person—wouldn’t that just make him miserable? To put on an act all the time must be exhausting. But I really don’t know anything about my “boyfriend.”

“Anyone hungry?” Ava asks.
