“By the way, Lily,” I say. “Thanks for your feedback on my app.”

She stares at me with innocent eyes. “What are you talking about?”

I playfully shove her shoulder. “I know it was you.”

“Darn it.”

I laugh. “I really appreciate it. Is it okay if I share your feedback with all the users? I want to encourage them to complete the surveys and offer their thoughts. It’d be awesome to present that to the judges as well.”

“Sure!”

“Sorry I didn’t have a chance to give feedback,” Chloe tells me. “I’ve been so swamped with the new issue of the paper.”

“That’s okay,” I assure her. “Besides, you guys didn’t get matched yet, so there’s nothing to review—”

Lily’s phone notification sound echoes through the car.

“That was loud,” Ava says with a laugh.

“Oh, sorry.” Lily fishes her phone out of her pocket. “I increased the notification volume last night because I was reading one of Mom’s favorite Regencies and a certain person was getting a little annoyed that I wasn’t texting him back…”

“I wasn’t annoyed with you,” Xavier corrects. “I’m never annoyed with you. I just missed you.”

“Aw.” Lily snuggles into his arms. “I’m so sorry, Romeo. You know I always get lost in books, especially Regencies.”

“I know.” He kisses her cheek. “But the loud notification worked, didn’t it?”

“Totally! Now let’s see who’s bothering me—” Her eyes widen and her mouth drops open. “Oh my gosh! I got a match!”

“You did?” I nearly fly off my seat. “Can I see how the notification pops up?”

She passes me her phone. With heart designs and bold pink letters, it says,Congratulations! Your Perfect Match has found you a match!

“Oh wow,” I say, my throat choking up. I don’t usually get emotional, but it looks so beautiful. All my hard work has brought this result. I’m so proud of myself.

“Let’s see who you matched up with.” I hand Lily’s phone back to her, barely able to contain my curiosity and excitement. “Lily, you’re my first match.”

“Really? Gulp. Pressure.” She clicks on the notification and stares at her screen, light shining in her eyes. “I’ve been matched with Xavier!”

“Really?” He bends over her to peer at her phone. “Neat!”

She starts reading a summary provided by the app that tells her why she’s been matched with this person. Based on their personalities, interests, habits, moral beliefs, and life goals the app feels that they are a perfect match.

Xavier’s phone gets a notification.

I sit up. “Is that what I think it is?”

He retrieves his phone from his pocket and studies the screen. “Congratulations! Your Perfect Match has found you a match!”

“Is it me?” Lily demands. “Is it me? Is itme???”

“No…it says I was matched with someone else.”

Her face falls. “What…?”

What?

He chuckles and bends close to her. “Just kidding. Of course I was matched with you.” He gives her a quick but sweet kiss on the lips.
