“Sorry, Ava,” Chloe says. “I don’t want him to know Liam and I matched. Because then hereallywould be worse than my dad.”

“Oh, my bad. I don’t know what it’s like to have an overprotective brother.”

“It’s okay,” she assures her with a smile. “I didn’t think he’d be so serious about finding a match, though. He’s never had a serious girlfriend before. Just a few that didn’t last long.”

“Well, no doubt Willow’s awesome app will match him,” Lily says.

“Hey, you made it.”

I turn around and find Colt standing before me with two cups.

“Hey,” he says again. Then he nods to my friends and the guys. “Hi, everyone. Thanks for coming.”

“Sure!” Lily says, a spark in her eyes as she glances from me to Colt. “Let’s let the cute couple have some alone time.” She grabs Xavier’s hand and pulls him to the dance floor.

The rest of my friends wave at me and follow her.

“So, yeah, I made it,” I say to Colt. “Girlfriend reporting for duty.”

He laughs. “Boyfriend reporting for duty.”

“That doesn’t really make sense because this isyourparty, and as the host you should be present.”

“Right. Drink?” He holds out one of the cups.

“This better not have alcohol.”

He looks offended that I even suggested such a thing. “I don’t have alcohol at my parties. This is orange soda.”

“Trying to poison me with all that sugar?”

His face changes. “Oh, sorry. Do you want water?’

I laugh. “I’m just kidding. I love this stuff. Thanks.” I accept the cup from him and take a few sips.

We’re both standing there in silence again.

“So it’s nice meeting you here and not in your room,” I say. “You know, without me bashing your skull in with a bat.”

He chuckles as he waves his hand. “It’s all good. That weapon was useless, anyway. My skull, thankfully, is fully intact.”

“That’s good. Because it’s not good to have a cracked skull.” I rub my forehead. “Sorry. I’m being so awkward. I don’t really know how to do the whole girlfriend thing in public.”

“You’ve been doing a great job so far,” he tells me with a reassuring smile. “But if you don’t feel comfortable, you can go home.”

In the past, I might have jumped at the opportunity. But now? I don’t want to leave. I…want to hang out with Colt.

“I’m good,” I tell him.

“Okay, great. Do you want to dance?” He nods to where my friends are having lots of fun on the dance floor. “They seem really happy.”

“Oh, yeah,” I say with a light laugh. “They just got matched with each other on the drive here and are super happy about that.”

Colt’s face lights up. “You got successful matches?”

“Yeah. All my friends matched with their boyfriends.”

“Nice! I’m so happy for you.”
