What else is new?

“Cassie and I want to take a long weekend to New York City. We want to see the holiday show, the tree, and do some shopping.”

“When?” I asked.

“Thanksgiving.”

“No.”

“I knew you would say that.”

“Then why did you ask?”

“I thought you could arrange for us to fly out after dinner. We wouldn’t miss the holiday with you. We can still celebrate and do our tradition, but we would like to leave on Thanksgiving night so we could get an early start on Friday.”

“I’ll think about it.”

“Jude? We want to shop, we want to see a show, and have dinner in a fancy restaurant. You can make all of that happen.”

“I said I would think about it.” I spun my barstool in the direction of the dance floor. “Why don’t you go and enjoy the rest of the evening?”

“Is that what you’re planning on doing?” She glanced across the room. “I hope you can keep up.”

“I’m not worried.” I got up, and then kissed her cheek. “Don’t drink too much. It’s not a good look for you.”

“Love you too,” she shouted as I walked away.

Things with Carly had never been easy, but she was the mother of my child, so I kept it as simple as I could for Cassandra. Giving Carly whatever she wanted made life easier for all of us, but keeping her in her place could be draining.

I smiled and waved at family and friends as I made my way to the dance floor.

“Uncle Jude.” The beautiful bride kissed my cheek. “Are you having a good time?”

“Of course, sweetie.” I stared at her new husband. “Make sure you take care of this girl or you’ll answer to me.”

“I…um…yes, sir.” Jeff tugged on his collar. “She’s amazing.”

Allie beamed at Jeff with all the characteristics of young love. Exciting, fresh, new. Their life held so many possibilities.

“I know you’ll be happy.” I shook Jeff’s hand. “If either of you ever need anything, you know where to find me.”

“Thank you,” Jeff said. “We appreciate your generous honeymoon gift. Two weeks in your villa in Brazil. We can’t wait.”

“It was my pleasure. Enjoy it.”

“Love you.” Allie leaned into my ear. “Your friend is very pretty.”

“She is.” I smirked. “I’m going to dance with her.”

“Have fun,” she said.

Several of my nephews and cousins cheered when I hit the dance floor. I exchanged moves with a few of my female family members as I made my way to the one woman I ached to touch. The only one I had any interest in tonight.

I worked my way through the sweaty, drunk crowd. We were approaching the hour where the party was about to get wild. I planned to be in my suite with myplus oneby the time things got too out of control.

I slipped between the people and came up from behind Emmie. When I placed my hand on her hip, she glanced over her shoulder and smiled at me. Without missing a beat, we moved in sync.

Cassandra waved at us before dancing off into the horde. The lights flashed around us as the music took on a slower tempo. I took her hips in my hands and moved her, swiping my lips along the side of her neck. She tensed when I slithered one hand up her ribcage and to the side of her breast.
